A friend of mine needed a band saw and I had one that had been collecting dust for some time, so I told him to come get it, he could have it. He did so, then handed me a hard gun case and said 'this thing has a ball stuck in it and you can have it' :shocked2: . I got it home and it was a .50 cal.,, CVA frontier in great shape with a ball stuck about 3 inches from the breech. I pulled the nipple and clean out screw and pushed the ball closer to the breech. There was no powder under it so I dribbled in about 20 grains of 3f and replaced the screw and nipple. Of course I was out of #11 caps so I used a musket cap and blew out the ball and cleaned her up. The triggers/ lock need adjusting, won't stay on full ****. I'll get her working soon and plan on decorating her with a lot of silver inlays and fuferaw and use her to introduce a couple of local lads to black powder shooting  . Does anybody have any experience with these or loads to share? Bound to be fun! Thanks, George.

My first BP rifle was a CVA Frontier .50 with the 24" barrel. It was really accurate with 70 grains of 2F, an .015 patch and a .490 ball.

Great rifle once you get the triggers adjusted. Start with 60 grain charges and work up from there. We shoot ours with 2Fg, 60 grain charges and a home cast .490 ball with ticking. While we have yet to seriously work up a load with this rifle, my daughter shoots bullseyes with every shot.

Thanks everybody, it looks really simple. I like it for the idea of a youth/loaner rifle. Jethro I was thinking about 70gr 2f w/prb and you confirmed it. I liked the video too, Mr Morrison, resurrection is the word! Swathdiver, we'll see what happens soon with an 11 year old lad, George.

Excellent youtube video! Was very well made. Your explanations were right on.

A resource that will help others if their inclined to resurrecting an old abused muzzleloader .

The evapo-rust will definitely take care of the rust buildup in the bore as well as all the other steel or iron peaces. After I wash the evapo-rust out of the bore and off all the other steel hardware, I give everything a good oiling.Put it back together and and run through a function check. Pop a few caps to be sure the firing channel is clean.

The altimate test is then to load her up with an adequate RB load, aim and fire!

If no problem, I would go a little higher in charge a shoot again.

Lastly, I would put my normal load that I currently use for that rifle and shoot her off!

I would reckon your old muzzleloader is back from the dead and is a deadly game stopper!

I foresee alot of meat and hogs in your freezer in the very near future

Great link and story. Was very well made.

I Hope the very best to you and your CVA Frontier. Great job in bringing it back to shootable condition. Was very educational to watch.

Now you can hand it down to your kids and grandchildren.

Respectfully, Cowboy :hatsoff:

Thanks Cynthia, sounds good. Good to hear from you. We have a betrothed couple of ladies in our county who are dear friends and they like to shoot. Now we just have to coax them over to the dark side, Ha! Theres always hope for your sweetie and my bride! Be safe and watch out for those mountain lions, George.
