Check it using a tight patch and see how far the rod turns when pushed down the barrel.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to the rifle...
Been mulling over getting a 58 and cane across this - listed at $400.

I have also seen a post on another site that there were only about 500 of the 58's made (some say the twist was 1:66, others say 1:70).
The owner sent these pictures. The rifle "appears" to be in fairly good shape (from the pictures).
I have read comments that the "88" in front of the serial number is the year it was made.
The barrel is also stamped "RECONDITIONED" - not sure what that means.
Also, I am a little concerned about the barrel end picture - is that dust or something else.

just dust.

Would be a 1:66 since its the 58cal. Either way, it'll be a great shooter. Rifle looks very clean. Most 58s you find when they pop up are the mountain rifles, not the hawken. Thats a pretty rare hawken.

Just found this post from 2009 on this website...

From the 1983 catalog...
"Big Bore Mountain Rifle:
Note: identical to the Mountain Rifle specifications above with the following exceptions:
Stock: unadorned wider select hardwood with fully-formed beavertail cheekpiece
Barrel: 1" across the flats and .58 caliber is rifled one turn in 72"
Weight: 8 lbs., 2 oz.
PR407: .54 caliber percussion rifle $294.95
KA729: .54 caliber percussion kit $209.95
KA730: .58 caliber percussion kit $209.95"

My CVA mountain rifle is 1 in 72 if that helps.

So, if you were looking for a 58, what you pay for the Hawken version of the CVA Big Boar?
28" barrel vs 32" and an extra barrel key seems to be the major difference.
Because I'm not able to examine in person, my main concern is the "RECONDITIONED" stamped on the barrel.
