well i finally finished my cva hawken kit, i browned the barrel with LMF. it turned out pretty good for my first kit. i'll try and get some pic's up latter. i shot it last sunday, and i'm well please with it, it's show's great potential with .490 prb. i was thinking that i was gona have to do alot of sight adjustment, i started at 25yds. and it was shooting dead center but 4"low, so i elevated the rear sight up. i started with 60grs. of Jim shockey gold, and worked up to 80grs. satified with the group i moved my target to 50yds, and it's still shooting 4" low, and i'm out of elevation of the rear sight. but it's shooting a nice group at 25yds. but i give up at 50yds. cause it was getting to hot for me. i need to replace the front sight with a lower one so i get it sighted in at 50yds, then i can see how well it shoot's at 100yd. i think i need to be 3" high at 50yds to be dead on at 100yd. that should get me close, and i can go for there.

If that's a blade front sight you can file some off the top to raise POI. But go slow. A little bit of filing goes a long ways to raising POI.

I'd drop the rear sight to the bottom, then file the front to bring it up to POI at 50, then use the rear sight to raise the elevation from there.

Mine originally came with the CVA standard adjustable sights, which were "self adjustable" or just plain possessed on mine. I tried several fixes and eventually replaced them with a fixed semi buckhorn in the rear and a german silver blase up front, then filed the front to raise POI until it was dead on. I hope your sights are better than mine were, but the gun is a keeper. Many if not most of them shoot great, so I think you'll be happy--even though I won't be surprized if somne give you a hard time about whooting a cheap gun. Let them, makes it that much better when you beat them.

Most of the people I have shot with who yelp about CVA's being "a hunk of junk." Are shooting high dollars guns and getting beaten by CVA's. :idunno: :idunno:

i did'nt use the factory rear sight, i think it look's out of place on the rifle. i bought a Marble's fullbuck horn rear sight, and just opened up the dovetail in the barrel. i love that sight, to me it acts like a peep sight it makes the front sight crisper. i used the front sight that came with the kit, i could be filed down, but i'd rather open up the dovetail and install a Marbles sight with a brass or Ivory bead. the front sight now is .450 high, so i think i'll try a .410. that should get me where i want. after i get a load worked up i want to be 1" high at a 100yds. this rifle will be for hunting, but it might lend itself to target work too! i can say one thing, it will shoot circles around my T/C hawken .50. it has a rusty barrel, and i'm doing good to hit a pieplate three times at 25yds.

It sounds like the T.C. would benefit from a good lapping. If you want details drop me a p.t. Again I thank you for helping me get the Cherokee for the grandson. I finally got a mold last rendezvous to pour him some .440 balls and cast him 500 so we will start making smoke.

the crown is toast on the T/C, the guy before me must have got crazy with the ramrod. i was gona cut/recrown the barrel but it's pitted pretty good too. it will get a new barrel someday, but for now it'll gather dust with the new kid in town!

My Thompson Center Hawken has a good barrel and both my CVA Kentucky and Mountain Rifle will outshoot it anyday of the week.

Thompson Centers are usually better looking than CVA`s, but in my opinion are overated and overpriced.

You could have the TC barrel drilled out and lined with your choice of caliber ... just a thought :)
