I just bought a CVA Kentucky percussion for 25.00. Problem is there is a ball jammed in the barrel. I tried using a ball puller pulled the screw right out of the ball.I thought no problem took the rifle apart to remove the breech plug. Who ever built this gun did not use anti sieze on the plug it will not budge. If I can't get the ball out I was thinking of changing it to a flinter . This rifle has a 33&7/16" barrel and is 7/8 across the flats. Any suggestins on getting the ball out or which barrel and lock to use? If I change it over I will go with a 50 cal instead of the 45.
Help anyone?

The CVA breech is a bear to get out. The drum where the nipple screws in is threaded into the breechplug so you have to remove it first. Might be easier to just pull the nipple and pack in as much 3f or 4f powder as you can get in behind the ball, make sure it is seated all the way, and just shoot it out.

rebel is right, the drum has to come out first. otherwise, damage will be done to the drum and the breachplug. many informative threads on the forum about removing stuck projectiles. everybody dryballs at least one time! i agree with not removing the breechplug. make sure its seated after removing the nipple and putting some ffff in the drum. point it in a safe direction and let 'er rip.

Have you tried one of those co2 dischargers? Mine works slick the few times I've needed it. If you have not tried it I would before messin with the breech.

I'll go along with Rebel with one exception. You don't know what or if any powder is under the ball. It might be smokeless. If you do put powder thru the nipple just get a long string and get behind a barrier when you yank on the trigger. Do not do this with the gun in your hands.
Fox :hatsoff:

If you can't get it out the ways given, heres is another one some have used ,puting a grease fitting in drum, have to get right threads, and pump out with grease gun. Dilly

Great price for a great shooter, if the barrel is in good shape! I would try for a longer pull screw, and get it all the way through the ball, and soak it well! It should pull!

If you go with this method, the threads are 6x1mm.
metric.
the adder about smokeless powder possibly under the ball is good advice!
try a CO2 discharger if you have access to one.
might also help toget some lube onto the patch also...water, wd40 ect. of course this would negate trying to shoot it out using 4F!
but better safe than maimed!

I have a CVA Mountain Type rifle. I wanted to see if the barrel was worth re-using.
I pulled the drum but never got the breechplug out. I even took it a a builder with 30 yrs experience and he could not get it loose.
It apears as if when it was threaded and drilled burrs locked up the breachplug. I will either have to cut off the plug and refit a breach plug or use it as is.
Good Luck! If I had a stuck ball I think I would go with the grease zerk and hydralic it out.

Thanks guys! I was worried about the possibility of smokeless powder also. I pulled the drum off and found the drum and barrel packed with old powder and grease. I had to drill the crud out of the drum and got a hole started in the barrel. I have used dental picks to get the majority of the crud out. Now have it soaking in solvent. I can now see the ball at least if I hold the light at the right angle. I will pick up the CO2 discharger tomorrow . Apparently the last owner never cleaned this gun.

 Just now pulled the ball out! Apparently the soak in the solvent did the trick. I put the ball puller in and gave a good pull and out it came. Not before I broke the end of the ram rod off in my hand!! The barrel looks good going to do a very through cleaning now. Rebrown the barrel and try it out! Thanks all for the suggestions.

you can polish that by running some well oiled 3M scotchguard pad up and down multiple times, or 4-0 steel wool...use lots of lube!

Glad you had success!
