Go ahead and try it. It might work all right.

On the other hand it might cause a build up of hard fouling.

Back in the '70's and early 80's there were several brands of "patch lube" sold that used petroleum based grease as a base and this stuff was particularly bad at creating hard fouling because of its reaction with the burning black powder.

On the other hand, some of this stuff from back in those days was made with animal fat. It worked well then and it should work well now.

i got the patch lube in a CVA single-shot shooters kit with a copyright date of 1984. i bought the kit along with a bunch of other muzzleloading supplies from a coeworker whos grandfather had passed away.

i just picked up some black denim from walmart that measures around .019-.020 to try in my 58 cal Jaeger. figured id try some of the patch lubes i had in my muzzleloading stash to see how they work. ive also got some Cabelas black powder pistol lube, but i will bring plenty of spit just in case none of those work well.

Ballistol makes for a good patch lube.

The cva grease patch lube works well in my hawken but my kentucky don't like it. if it works good for you don't get to liking it to much cause you cant get it anymore.lots of folks wont use it because its made from lithium grease.

I would use it . The only problem that I can see is if it works like a champ you will not find it available for sale. My guess is that it's nothing this forum can not deal with! Geo. T.

i went to the range today and gave it a shot, after the first shot the gun became hard to load. this gun is NEVER hard to load! so i dumped the grease like a bad habit.

the cabelas pistol lube worked really well! i suspect its just oxi-yoke wonder lube thats been repackaged (smells the same). the onley issue i had is that the stuff got kind hard to squeeze out of the tube due to the the cold (was about 50 out). i solved this by keeping the tube under my arm, this kept it easy to squeeze out.
