Please, someone who knows the rifle, help me. I bought a CVA squirrel rifle, cleaned it up and discovered the set triggers must be set before it can be cocked. Any attempt to cock it before setting, results in an easily pulled hammer, but no clicks. The triggers work fine when set before cocking. Is that normal for this rifle, or do I need to work on adjusting. Thanks. Dale :dunno:

I have several rifles with the single phase double set triggers. You must set the triggers in order to cock the rifle. I guess it was quite common until the lawyers got involved.

I'm going to have to speculate here. Modern factory double set triggers are designed to allow the hammer to be cocked before setting the trigger. All too often the trigger plate gets pulled too deeply into the trigger plate mortise. This raises the trigger levers that when unset will interfere with the sear lever preventing the sear from entering the full cock and often even the half cock notch. The solution is to lower the trigger plate by usually making a thin shim to place in the trigger mortise. Easy to check out by making a shim of cardboard. There may be other ways to prevent the interference of the trigger levers and the sear, but the shim is the simplest.
