Need help locating a cva trapper single shotgun.Dixie has it listed in my 2004 catalog but no longer have any in stock.anybody have any experence with one are they any good or?????????

I wasn't overly impressed with the one i had. They aren't bad for the money but i would rather shop around for a used New Englander from T/C. JMO

ive got one, it is choked full, does ok on clay targets, haven't hunted with it yet. It has a squeeeze type choke, not a jug or a screw in choke.

Good inexpensive gun.

A little light for a long day of shooting at the target range, it will start to wear on me after a while.

Haven't shot it much lately, but the light weight might be good to carry on a long walking quail hunt.

Your results may vary.

Rayb: There is no reason to load that gun with heavy loads for shooting clays. Down-load that to a 20 ga. load of 2 1/2 drams(69 grains), and 7/8 oz of shot for clays, and you can shoot all day and not feel it. Or even consider using a 28 ga. load of 2 drams(55 grains) and 5/8 oz of shot. At the short ranges that clays are shot, this should be sufficient. Use FFg powder rather than FFFg. powder, too, in that 12 ga. Save the 3 dram and 1 1/4 oz. shot, and heavier loads for the field, where you are only going to be shooting a few rounds. If you load #8 shot, you should do fine at clays.

This is probably of no value at all to your question, but I bought a NOS CVA double percussion 12 ga kit and absolutely love it. In the 5 years I've been using it, the only problem I've ever had is that I just today lost the barrel wedge. (Yeah, my fault I know: I was the builder after all.)

But for use, I shoot with friends who use modern pumps, break opens, etc., and outshoot or at least match them all the time. (Usually outshoot, to be honest.)

I always defer to those of you who are more experienced than I - and that's most of you - but I really like and often depend on mine.

Homestead. I had to add a recoil pad to my CVA kit to give me a better length of pull, and I took some wood off the comb to fit my face, but the gun shoots okay. Its not the prettiest gun around, and I would not want to brag about the quality of that stock, but it does very well. I use 2 3/4 drams( 75 grains) of FFg powder, under 1 1/8 oz. of #8 sshot for clay targets, and dove, and 1 1/4 oz of #5 shot for pheasants and chukkar. Neither beats me up, but kills the birds within 25-30 yds. I rarely take shots that far.

I have the Trapper combo set. Mine is the thin barrel/choketube 12 guage with the 50 caliber barrel. The 50 barrel is my current slug gun. It doesn't do any of the things my other CVA barrels have done well at all, but it shoots the Lee Target Minnie really well. Simple plain working set that has taken lots of game for me in the time I have had it.

Ive got the barrel with screw in choke and was wondering how it would work on my H+A underhammer, or one thats like GMWW's on Builders page or try building a stock to put it on. Thanks for the info, I was wondering if it would shoot a ball, Ive found the 20/62 seems to do it all, down loaded a little for shot for good spread, or # 3 and 4 buck. Fred :hatsoff:

Using a 3/4 powder to shot load, my barrel will shoot better than full at 30 yards. If you don't have the really thick over powder wads, don't even bother trying to work up a load until you get some. 90/120 is just a touch over the book loads for the gun, and in the light gun, kicks like a mule. This bird was a touch over 40 yards....

Be careful with the end of the barrel and the choke tubes. They are pretty easy to damage. I had to bend my barrel to get it to pattern POA. Good Luck!

Much thanks for info I know my H+A underhammer doesnt weigh maybe 1/2 what your's does, kind of shoot and duck! :rotf: Fred :hatsoff:
