As said ,set ,properly used are of great use on targets as well as game.I don't set it until I'm ready to shoot however,I have not experimented with wether setting it before hand endangers the mechanism, but unless i'm in a good position to take a prepared shot at game or a target ,it 's not set. Each to his own, however.I feel it's too easy to have an a.d.On targets I have flubbed a shot by touching it before I should, that's the price of any light trigger pull-why we practice.carrying it pre-set I just don't do it don't seem like a good idea.Using it to shoot game on a long shot-that's why it's there, for accuracy. If you don't think a lighter trigger aides in accuracy ,your not a knowledgable rifleman or your ignoring a lot of what shooters of rifles have learned over the past 300 years.I'm not a great rifleman,I am a fair one but I do know what makes a rifle shoot great,a well trained rifleman and a well tuned rifle.3 pounds is a good hunting rifle but less is better for real accurate shooting. If a man can shoot great with 3 pound trigger than he can with training and practice do greater with a lighter one,That is fact.If you only want a good reliable single trigger That's ok,If you want a set trigger, make it a good one, adjust it right and love it's beauty ,I do.
