Dawn Dishsoap

Several years ago I came across several shooters discussing the cleaning of muzzleloaders on a forum. I dont recall which one. It very well could have been this one. The merits of water and dishsoap were discussed. One of the shooters swore by Dawn and praised it highly. Would that have been word of mouth or the written word? I tried it and still use it to this day. Its pretty good stuff. That was me. How did You "discover" Dawn?

Its certainly a legit thread. Maybe somebody can spring for some palm olive and ajax and dollar store brands and do a real test? Maybe I could get a Govt grant for 62.75 million dollars and do it my self? Nah...2 years too late

Yes Necchi there is - just use the ol' handmade lye soap using lard and wood ashes. It will however take your browning off the gun finish and take the hide off your hands.

Yes, Dawn is king unless you want to use Tide.

Just don't use Cascade, it cleans better than either of the above, but will cause rust.

As I stated in last post on cleaning "Dawn " is nothing but a surfactant. Look at "Simple Green" and note the cost per oz. Dawn is $$$$ Maybe no one knows what a surfactant is, SOAP !!!

But then I would use condensed goose squat if it worked and was available .

A few drops of dawn im hot water has been my cleaner for a long time. I occasionally try something else but always seem to come back to dawn.
I can’t remember who introduced me to dawn and hot water. That was a long time ago.

I have a question for necchi; you always seem to feel the need to question a posters validity on just about every subject posted, be it ebay finds or dawn dish liquid and host of others.

You didn't answer the man's question and belittled him for asking it.

Why, the snide, uncalled for comments, enquiring minds want to know.

I guess I don't have to read then and wonder why. It could be iron box time.

I do recall some videos mentioning dawn soap when cleaning BP revolvers. I don't Shoot revolvers much but that is what I do (remove wood grips first of course)

Those who reload "unmentionables" will use dish soap to clean brass. I can say that I need soap on my hands but my Muzzle loaders seem to do pretty good with a bucket of hot water. I use 2 buckets. One with hot water from tap. One to dump it into so I can get a couple changes. remove barrel, nipple then pumping action.

One reason I like water is cause I am not having to rinse out soap before using the WD 40 then the rust inhibitor.

I'm going to try the windshield washer fluid this summer.

OP, like you, I get tired of the wise crack remarks. The search system on this board is in my opinion sub par with other forums I frequent for other hobbies. I am not surprised you needed to make a specific post.

While water alone will do the job, if we use any soap it's probably what is available under the kitchen sink. I asked and my wife said Dawn is one of the best dish soaps for cutting grease and that's what many women buy. We don't have a dishwasher so she wants a soap that's effective without tearing up our hands. It's more expensive but considering how little we use when cleaning our guns, cost is sort of irrelevant.

I've used Simple Green and it works fine but the Dawn is usually closer to hand and that's what I grab after a range session.

I myself am satisfied wirh Palmolive. My neice insists in having Dawn on hand. So naturally I use hers. (Cheap)

No - surfactants might be added. Then we must distinguish between soap and detergent (https://www.quirkyscience.com/difference-soap-detergent/)

I probably discovered Dawn because there was a bottle by the sink. While there are other dish detergents that work well Dawn seems to be near the top of the list and that's all my wife uses. I need to say that I do almost all my cleaning in a 5 galon bucket of hot tap water with cleaning agents added and I even clean our revolvers under water. Over many years I have tried all kinds of cleaning agents with the water ranging from the 409 type to industral cleaners and various combinations of them and found that none really worked any better than Dawn. Could I save money by substituting something else? Possibly but it probably would only ammount to $2 or $3 per year so why bother. There's a bottle above my workbench, one by the sink and more under the sink so why add to the clutter by keeping something else that probably wouldn't work any better around?

Thanks for the education on soaps. I did not know about some of those facts on soaps + surfactants.But this is a forum where one goes to learn something though isnt it?
