Thank you very much. I had been to there sight earlier looking at horn kits and totally missed them.

If you have (or ever will have) a beard, just remember to keep the tacks away from the area where your face will be when you shoot.

More than one bearded shooter found that the hairs can get snagged by a tack head.

The sudden ripping out of facial hair as the gun fires can be uncomfortable, or so I've been told. :rotf:

Dixie sold real brass tacks.

I knew a guy that restored old furniture and he gave me a hundred old brass tacks from an old leather couch he refinished. These were old cast tacks with hemispherical heads. I swapped them off at a rendezvous years ago but the professional furniture refinishers may be the ticket to getting period tacks.

Just Jim...

Good observation! Won't put tacks anywhere beard may rest upon stock!

All the tacks that I saw on TOTW are brass plated. I want to use real brass tacks. Any idea where to find the right style in real brass?
You got me...foot in mouth, brain in gear. Thinking Crazy Crow and typed TOTW...necchi got in with the real answer. Time for meds and go nite-nite! :haha:

Yes but, reply was still appreciated and I still got directed to the right place. :)

Here's a couple of pics of stocks with tacks.

The first is the Hawken rifle at the Smithsonian and I'm pretty sure not too many would turn down an ownership opportunity because of the tacks :)

There is no question that the Smithsonian Hawken is a gorgeous rifle.....not because of the tacks but, in my humble estimation, in spite of them. The wood is beautiful and all of the metal has a patina that money can't buy and I'll admit that the tacks are not that off putting but I think it would be even more attractive if they weren't there. It's just my personal opinion and I know not everyone will agree with me. That's okay, it's only an opinion. :hatsoff:

Its a mater of taste. I think they look neat myself although I dont use them as they dont fit my time. Of corse a fellow can do what he wants with his gun,I would just say go slow and make sure you get the pattren you want. Its a lot like a tatto, goes on easy hard to get out.

Well, my rifle arrived today and needless to say, the more I handle it, the more I am thinking against the beads.

Can a patch box be added to the butt stock to make it a little more unique?

Good call!

Not sure if it would make it more unique. I suspect there is more than one trade rifle out there with a patchbox. That said, the entire rifle would (probably) need to be refinished if a PB was added.

Is the Trunk Shoppe still around? They used to sell solid brass tacks with square shanks- did a quick internet search and couldn't find them.

Crazy crow carries several sizes and finishes on their tacks.I inlaid small white beads in my French musket and get lots of compliments.

Here's a pic (black and white and not overly "sharp") of three original Ohio halfstock rifles (all Vincents).

This gives you a decent side/side comparison between a "patchbox", "capbox", and plain buttstock.

Now, with a flintlock a "capbox" would look way out of place, but otherwise you could go either way depending on your particular tastes.

In your case I might tend to a wait a year or so. Have fun with the rifle. You may find that what seems like a good idea today may not even be on your "radar" a year from now.

Anyhow, here's the pic...

Of course you are correct in this. My wife says, sometimes when I get on an idea, I'm like a pitbull with lock jaw! :shake:

Thanks for the pics. :)
