I recently stumbled upon an exhibit containing rifles by J Dickert and John Bonewitz at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Both rifles are dated to 1790. The Dickert carries a Drepert-inscribed lock. This is exciting (to me, at least) because opportunities to view Pa longrifles are scarce here in fur trade country.

I took some photos that I can post if anyone is interested. The exhibit is in Gallery 304, and is part of the permanent collection, so should be there for a while. http://artsmia.org/directories/art-finder/search/art.cfm?directory=0&query=bonewitz&id=65363 http://artsmia.org/directories/art-finder/search/art.cfm?directory=0&query=bonewitz&id=65363

There were also 3 German wheel locks in a nearby gallery. http://artsmia.org/directories/art-finder/search/art.cfm?directory=0&query=rifle&id=5373

I can understand your excitement. I live in Pa. and rarely see original rifles.

At Dixon's Gunmakers Fair, the KRA usually has a nice display of signed rifles by early makers. Of the few left, most are in private collections, not readily available for viewing by us commoner's.

I'd be glad to see any photo's you may have.

Scalper,

There weren't any photos attached to my earlier post. The links are to the Institute's webpages. I'll organize what photos I have and post them.

Most museums prohibit taking pictures. PIA in a situation like this where you want to share adn have no desire to sell the pics.

May have to make a special trip to the museum when I'm ther in April.

Thanks for the post!

Cool,I think I'm headin over there to take a look. TOTW in Elk River has a Dickert that they actualy let me handle. I almost wet myself.

Thanks for the heads up!! I haven't been to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts for a couple of years. I think this is the best reason to go that I have yet seen. Is this a new exhibit? I really don't recall seeing it in the past
