Help guys, Left arm has partial paralysis (last 6 months) from old neck injury. I need advice on a long barrel(9"plus) to shoot singlehanded at Arkansas deer. The law says, IIRC,.45cal+ ok with conicals,.54cal+ ok w/roundball. Who makes a decent inexpensive factory gun or kit that is sidelock flint,percussion or underhammer? Need a real duckstomper to kill these ironclad little darlings. :rotf: I did use a TC hawken .50, I will probably trade it. Any Ideas? :idunno: Treestalker.
 
The Pedersoli Kentucky barrel is about 10". Mine is a .54.

Lyman used to make a pistol to match the GPR in .54, maybe they still do. Sitting fox and northstar west offers large bore pistols, Could you do a 'blanket gun? Or that nearly unmentionable canoe gun?
 
I know there was a single shot "Kentucky" style available a few years back with a 12 to 14 inch barrel, perhaps a smidge longer...just don't recall the name. I'm sure somebody will jump in here with the right name! :wink: Meanwhile, there are the Howdah pistols with two barrels and available in .625" smoothbore or .58" rifled. The .58's could take any of the Minie balls out there in balls weren't enough oomph. The only big bore pistol I've ever played with are the M.1855 Dragoon Pistol with shoulder stock. The new ones are 1-72" twist, but the older ones are 1-48" which for a 12" barrel might be a better choice. The only Bambi I even took with one was with 50 grains of FFFg and a #575494 Minie which is the 300 grain light one that looks like a Kieth semi-wadcutter front with the nice sharp edges. Though barely a 4-point, and like most central Texas whitetails was the size of a German Shepherd with long legs! :wink: Whatever, it was BOOM and tumble...he didn't go anywhere. Nothing succeeds like success! :thumbsup:
 
Seems like an interesting custom project. Not sure if I would trust a factory pistol to handle conicals with heavy charges

Pedersoli Bounty? Just a Kentucky with a longer barrel.

And the Howdah is another option. Mine are .62 smoothbores. Surprisingly accurate with patched balls.
 
50 & 54 caliber lyman plains pistols show as in stock at midsouth. price is $265.00 for either one. luck & have a good'en, bubba.
 
There's a new one in .45 for sale at a local gun shop. Interesting gun, but I really wouldn't have any use for something that long. But they also have a new caplock .54 Kentucky I've been thinking would make a great companion piece for my flintlock posted above. Just trying to figure out if I can scrape enough cash together.

The event on the video where the deer is taken is about around 5:37. The pistol was rested on the railing of the hunter's deer stand during the shot.
 
That's the video I was thinking of but couldn't remember the actual circumstances of the hunt. Thanks.
 
I have the double barrel 50 cal Howdah. Shooting that puppy one-handed would be a challenge.

I really like WesTex's story and Jumpshot's pictures of the Pedersoli kentucky and bounty hunter.Also the video of the one armed hunter, if he can do it left handed, I can do it with my right(thankfully I'm right handed) :shocked2: The gears are working towards building my own version of the bounty hunter,let's see, I've got an orphaned piece of .50 cal GM barrel oct to rnd out in the shop...why didn'I think of that? :idunno: Thanks to everybody for the 'eggs' :haha: :hatsoff: Treestalker. P.S. anybody know the length of barrel on the Bounty hunter?

Interesting. I recently ran across a reference to a similar pistol from the late 18th century. Flintlock, of course. David Thompson said:

"We were all eight well armed, each man had a Gun and a long knife, except Coxe, who had one of my Pistols, of Mortimer's make of eighteen inches barrel, carrying a ball of eighteen to the pound: for I remembered the menacing looks of many of the Natives."

That's essentially a .64 caliber pistol.

54 with a RB if the twist is not too fast.
This will kill deer dead and if in a blind or tree stand with a rest its a piece of cake to 40 yards or so. But put sights on it that work for you.
You seeing a physical therapist or such?
