I went ahead and did it, I divorced my wife of ten years. I sold my cattle to pay her off and be rid of her and HER debts. I managed to come out of this with a little spare change and I am thinking of buying myself a flintlock to celebrate. I would like a .58 in a southern poor boy type longrifle. Can you guys help a fella decide on a modestly priced rifle. With her gone I am still not quite used to having my own opinion and not being a dumbass. Opinions please, who do I need to call or what do I need to look at?

There are a lot of good builders out there, but take a look at Matt and Toni Avance of TVM. Toni posts on this forum as Slash, and their guns are nice and the prices are reasonable, especially for what you get. They are also very nice to deal with.

I have looked and looked and looked at that .54. It is a beauty.....not a .58 though. Still it would drop a deer. TVM has some nice ones, how long do they take to get a rifle to ya?

As for a good flinter, I'd like to mention our own Roy Stroh. He's a heckuva nice fellah, and will work hard to make you happy. Quality work, from what I've seen. Certainly worth talking to.

Thanks for the encouragement. I had thought of Roy and Mike Brooks as well, but I didn't want to presume and I doubt that I can afford their work, would that I could. I am trying to keep it under a thousand. It all depends on how much furniture I get to keep. I told her she can have any furniture in the house she wants.

I once traded a engagement ring for a 46/70 and some cash and I can say it was a far better outcome than the nuptuals would have brought. I still have the gun and it still makes me smile when I think about the mistake I almost made. I dodged a bullet and gained a rifle. I now have the wife I was meant to have and 2 great kids. I killed 2 wall hanger deer with that gun and they're on my basement wall. :hatsoff:

I had a builder east of El Dorado Springs, MO (Black Jack, MO) build one for me about 5 years ago - .45 cal. Drop me a PT and I will get his contact info to you if you want. He prefers to do smaller caliber longrifles, but I did ask him about doing a .58 for me and at the time he said he would. Price was more than reasonable (remember, 5 years ago) as far as I was concerned.

i'd go with brooks- in the certianty that you'll forget what you paid for it long before you're done using it.

Congradulations on making your mind up, some people just aren't met to be married.I think that I would look at great plains rifle or one of the other mass produced rifles in a good used condition.Now that you are no longer carrying the dead weight you will be able to have a custom made rifle constructed exactly as you want it.From what I have seen posted on this forem there are many gifted artist availabe for you.

I know that fella, he used to come in a lumberyard I worked at when I was younger. We see each other at the Pomme de Terre rondy as well. My dad almost bought a .40 from him at one time.I can't think of his name, isnt it Jack?I had forgotten all about him. He does nice work. I have been talking to Roy on this forum and he thinks he can fix me up, though.

Check with Larry Williams of Early Rustic Arms: http://www.earlyrusticarms.com/main.htm . He has a couple of .58s that might fill your bill without breaking the bank.

Hey Slowpoker, if its kill power you're worried about, I use my .54 GPR for deer and elk so I'm sure it will kill your deer too. Can also recommend a gun maker very reasonable. He built my .45 J P Dickert for me. Name of Mike Meese in Burr Oak , Mich. He advertises in Muzzleloader Magazine. Best of luck. :hatsoff:
