Do you like shooting a Roman nose style?

In grade school I fell in love with the Roman nose flintlock. My first rifle build was a Roman nose flintlock. I love this rifle, but hate to snuggle next to the stock as it hits me right on the cheekbone. I built it for style and was not thinking of fit. :redface: I still love this good shooter, but was wondering if anyone else out there is comfortable shooting the Roman nose?

I also prefer the Lancaster style butt stock. I've only owned one with a mild "Roman nose". I fired it comfortably with heavy charges - a .50.

I had a Pedersoli Kentucky and it didn't bother me at all. It was a .32 though. I do like the looks.

I have had a few of those T/C-Cabelas hawken type guns that were nasty cheek punchers. They did not have Roman-nosed combs either. I think the drop at comb and the heel-hoe angle play into cheek-recoil more than the mere shape of the comb.

I never shot but one an that was just one shot but that 50 cal felt lots worse than my 62 with a good stout load in it. I do love the looks of the roman nose guns though :hmm:

IMO, the Italians went way overboard on their "Roman nose" style stocks.

I don't know where they got an example of one but I've never seen a photo of a real "roman nose" Pennsylvania rifle that looked much like theirs.

Reading County Penn. rifles were known for this style of stock and most, if not all of them looked like the one I made from a Pecatonica River kit.

It is based on a A. Figthorn rifle

Notice, the comb is curved but it doesn't "hump up" to the point that it becomes a cheek slapper.

Allen Martin claims he can build a Leigh style rifle in .58 and not wack you in the face, but he has many rifles under his belt. He says you just have to pay special attention to the ratios. I've never shot one of his but know some who have and they say they shoot very well. I have shoulder some of his and they are very nice.

I had a chopped up original with a pronounced Roman nose. Never fired it, but shouldered it often. The sights on those old rifles were barely a 1/16 inch high and I think the stock kept the face back so focusing on those low sights was easier. I have long arms and preferred shooting a long straight comb stock. IIRC the kutztown makers had that roman nose butt stock. Shouldered a gun made by a great great great great uncle, Peter Angstadt. The cheek piece started to flare out at the front of the wrist and went clear back to the butt plate.

The designer probably got it from lookin' at his Gramma. I would think Italians should know a thing or two about Roman nose. :wink:

The cheek slap from Lehigh rifles is from a poor shape, and or, drop of the comb. Make it too wide or too square, and too much curvature,...... you've got a cheek slapper.

I've only built one that was a slapper, had to reshape the comb....narrower, and more rounded, ..... no more slap.

I was taught in the Army to "spot weld" and that is the way I shoot, with exception to the Roman nose. I try to shoot it with my head way back, but sometimes I sneak up on that comb and get bit. (LOL).

I shoot an FDC and it’s my favorite gun, does that count?

I think not, as my RN has a sharp comb. FDC is way softer or rounded at the comb. You have a good one though.

And maybe explain the ratios some mentioned?
