Everytime I shoot my TC Hawken or Renegade my cheek takes a beating. Do either the Lyman Trade Rifle or GPR have more drop in the stock than the TC's?

My GPR fits me perfect. Sights are aligned without scrunching of the Cheekbone. The Thompson I had, even though it was a.50 Cal. and using a light load, would catch me right under the Cheekbone. Yes,in my opinion, quite a difference....

I have to do the same thing with my TC, really hug my cheek to the stock. I am pretty much black and blue after yesterdays shooting.

T/C's and the Lyman Trade Rifle beat me up too. My GPR's don't.

Yup. TC's whap the snot out of me and my prominent cheek bones, but I've never had an issue with the Lyman GPR.

Wat kind of charges are you using? My .54 Jaeger and even my Brown Bess with heavy charges do not recoil enough to be a matter of concern.
OTOH, you can buy a rasp and fit the rifle to yer personal liking.

The most I have ever used was 80 grains of 2F.

The comb on TC Hawkens is higher than on the GPR, and that's all the difference to me. I always suspected that the TC's were originally designed to allow scope use, they work so well for that. TC's high comb is so well known that Pecatonica offers a replacement stock for them with less. Here is what they have to say about it.

I had a TC Hawken for years and it would beat my cheek so hard I thought my right eye would swell shut. :shake: I couldn't get acceptable accuracy with roundballs, so I was using a heavy conical and that really contributed to the "whuppin'" I was taking. Finally sold the thing and built myself a TOTW longrifle. Best decision I ever made!

I got the chance to shoot my buddy's GPR the other day and it was very pleasant to shoot with no cheek smacking. I think a lot of it has to do with a person's build and shooting style. :idunno:

I am thinking of purchasing a GPR myself. Just wanted to know how others felt. I have heard good things about them especially from those who had problems with their fit with a TC.

I find that all T.C.s are short in the stock for me. Simple solution put a "spacer" on the end of the stock. :idunno:

Sample from my tingly. This is how I solved the problem of a short stock on a gun I liked.

I wound up taking a ride to Dixon's Shop out in PA and bought a .54 GPR. Gun fits like a glove. Possibly going to shoot it today.

I think you'll be a very happy camper. I have the 54 and 50, and the 54 is by far my favorite. It really smacks deer, and with load tuning is plenty accurate for smacking snowshoe hare heads a lot further off than I can reasonably see them with aging eyes.

You know I have read accounts of folks claiming the TC Hawken beats them up and it must if they say so. I have never experienced it. But that leads me to wonder if those people never shoot any modern firearms? For instance my 12 ga over/under has virtually the exact same specs as the my TC Hawken. I shoot trap with it and no problems. My favorite TC rifle is roughly 14” LOP, 1 1/2” drop at comb, 2 ½ drop at heel. This is nearly the specs on my O/U. 8 ¼ lbs for the TC and 7 ½ for the O/U.
The trigger pull on the TC is 6 ½ lbs unset and 1 lb set. On my Lyman GPR the unset rigger was over 12 lbs (12 pounds is all my scale will measure). The set pull is 2 ¼ lbs. The LOP on the GPR is 13 1/2”.
I don't have the GPR right here in front of me but I know the drop at heel is more than 2 1/2” (the TC's spec). I suppose that is the over riding difference but still don't any of you shoot modern shotguns for instance? And they don't hurt you? :idunno:

My TC "Hawken" is a kit gun w/ a lot of thinning down, especially the cheekpiece. The comb was lowered as much as the tang of the buttplate would allow. My elk load is a 410 gr. conical ahead of 100 grs 2f and is very comfortable to shoot. ...Fred

I have three large safes full of modern guns accumulated over 50+ years of shooting. I don't own them, but had the privilege of shooting a large # of English and European doubles and drillings from a friend's massive collection while I was growing up. Some beat me and some didn't and it came down to stock configuration.

If you don't get beat up, fine. But don't project your lack of cheekbones onto others. Not everyone is built like you, or each other for that matter.

My Centerfires still beat me up worse than any BP rifle. My 30-06 kills me, I don't even like shooting it. I flinch bad. .50 Cal with max load I say woo hoo! My cheek bones are higher up and and I have a nice round face with plenty of padding.....

Here's the TC Hawken referred to in my previous post. Note how trimmed down the cheekpiece is. The comb was also lowered but doesn't seem so because the wrist was also reshaped...Fred
