Roundball & Paul, you sound like some good old trap shooting boys. If you guys are ever in the Az area let me know I sit on the Ben Avery Trap shooting board committee. I can hook you guys up with with all the comforts. 10 Gauge.

That is correct about your choke tubes Roundball, thats why Remington does not sell them as an accessory.
Mr ATA testing guru him self Don Zutz best pattern was 85% and has heard of some choke companies approaching 90%. Anyway I'm sorry Roundball for going off the trail with your thread, I'll stop my gab.
Not a problem at all, it was relevant to the discussion...this business of Jug Chokes and how they work sometimes makes my head hurt...on the one hand in spite of the expansion chamber the bottom line is that the shot charge gets restricted back down "only" to cylinder bore dimensions...yet prints the target with obvious choke effect.

Yes, I get it that the original cylinder bore dimension...compared to the dimension of the expansion chamber...appears as a restriction to the widened shot column in the expansion chamber...BUT...its still only "choked" back down to the original cylinder bore size.
:shocked2:

No question they work and I am an obvious believer in them...just wish I could 'see' a slow motion image of the dynamices of a shot charge expanding then being forced back down to C/B size in hopes of precisely understanding the physics at work there...

I will have to try the circle fly wads. I have always had good results with wonder wads only. My shotgun has a fixed mod. choke and I like using thin overshot cards or wonder wads for the ease of loading. Thick overpowder wads have always blown patterns for me and are a pain in the rear to load. I wonder if the 1/2" circle fly will go past my choke?

If you've got a good combination going I wouldn't change a thing.

And no, the Circle Fly .62cal and .54cal 1/2" lubed cushion wads I use are cylinder bore size...and a tight fit at that...you could manually force them in past your choke but I'd bet some of the sides would be shaved off and they'd compress smaller too...my thinking is you'd want to stay with the flexible wonderwads for your fixed choke.

With a fixed choke, even modified, you will blow the edges of the thicker OP wads, and cushion wads, trying to load them,IHMO, so there is no point to trying them. The OS cards you are using will provide a good seal if loaded properly.

I get very respectable patterns at 30 yards so if it aint broke don't fix it I guess. I will try the circle fly wads when I win the lottery and can afford a nice fowler.

I checked the 5 cornfields yesterday and they're all now cut...there were already several doves sitting on powerlines that go across a couple fields, so they should really be in there heavy by Sept. 1st.

It also got me to remembering that early on the shots should mostly be closer than they will later in the year, so I'm going to switch from 1+3/8oz #6s to 1+1/4oz #7.5s.

The pellet count will still be higher letting me use a couple Oxyoke wads (instead of the thicker cushion wads) to open the pattern a little wider & sooner without thinning the pattern...

I was looking around my area of the country for a gunsmith to put a bit of a jug choke in one barrel of my SXS Navy Arms double. I was surprised (but disheartened) to find that none of the local 'smiths had any idea what a jug choke was! So if you've got a gunsmith that can do this job, treat him well.

There is a smith in Dixon Nebr that jug chokes barrels. Pm me and I will give you his number
Scott

I'm going to make another range trip Saturday AM and run the same tests again with 1+1/8oz and 1+1/4oz #7.5 magnum shot...

Thanks Merch, that town is far enough away that I don't think I'll get there. I'm not too much in a hurry to choke the barrel anyway. :v
