:hmm: These are a set of horns that I bought today at an antique mall. They were bookends. The dragons are carved into the horns and wrap around them. I think they look rather nice, but my wife says I have not so good art tastes.

My question is could I make an 18th century horn out of them. They are 12" inside curve. The bottom is kind of triangular with 3 3/4" by 2" and a curve of about 4 1/2". They are not cracked or damaged and are open almost to the tip.

Would be a nice big horn

Dragons???? How about a Japanese match lock???
Look the horns over to see if the dragons have
a "toy". If not they are angry dragons...

Forgot to add,,,just my opinion based on no
facts what-so-ever...

they would make a nice set of horns....ya could most likely boil the ends to fit them to round base plugs :v .............bob

if i had those id make a double end horn one end for powder one end for shot to go with my early english plus the dragons would match my side plate quite well .

Wulf, if a dragon has a ball in his mouth he's happy, most chinese dragons have this.Sounds like you got a hold of a book called "The Art of Engraving" by James Meek.Thats where I learned it from.

If they are open to the tip, carving is out, you might be able to get some small raised rings for the strap rings, might be better to go with a staple up there.I have only seen one dragon on an original, and a knight on horseback was fightin' it! It was years ago and if I could remember I'd tell ya where to look fer it. I do know it was real folky lookin, and attributed to an american horn.

Those are real nice!

I would use 1 for drinking, and while drinking turn the other into a powder horn.

Good score!

By god i think they would be cool powder horns,i have seen flat style.Just trace the shape and cut the wood.I have a booth at an antique store and all kinds of horns come through there at times.Heck i never thought of makin poowder horn from them.Good idea.
