Greetings Maxiball,

My favorite style is Melchior Fordney. I have a weakness for German Silver mountins and 50 caliber.

Best Regards, John L. Hinnant

After watching a show about early shotguns on the History Channel this afternoon, I would have to go with a good ol' smoothbore that I could shoot buck and ball from...

I'm a rifleman at heart, but I was very impressed with the smoothbore's they showed ranging from matchlocks to flintlocks, and then it got to modern...

It might be time to start sharpening the tools and studying smoothbore's... I'm not sure of the caliber I'll end up with, but I'm thinking a maple stock, flintlock of course, and naturally, me as the builder...

Man, tough choice....I have some now that would have been dream rifles a few years back for me....I have long wanted an early Dickert and have now assembled the parts for one: high grade maple, Getz .54 swamped 42" barrel, Chambers Golden Age lock, etc....if it turns out well, it will be my dream rifle. But it would be tough to give up my 44" Colerain barreled .50 southern rifle by Don Bruton or my old (1974)PA .50 longrifle by Keith Casteel or my new .32 Tennessee squirrel rifle by local maker John Colvin......or for that matter the rifle I made myself back in 1978/79, a .45 PA longrifle built with high grade maple, Green River barrel and Cochran lock.....took me over 160 hours and a deep understanding of why custom rifles cost what they do....

I guess if I was gonna say a dream rifle....... it would have to be the one of the T.Allison rifles, either #5 or #6. I still cannot make up my mind which one I like the best.
I have a super piece of striped maple saved for one but just can't seem to get to building it... always messing with or making other rifles & knives.
However, one thing I would do different than the originals, I would use a larger bore to get the weight down some. These are around 40 caliber & the flintlock is fairly heavy, weighing in at around 10 1/2#, but the second one is OK at about 8 1/2 #.
I actually like the #6 the best but don't like the sideplate as I feel it don't fit the style of the rifle well at all, too large & kinda boxy compaired to the other side.... I even wonder if it is the original sideplate...., and plus I want it in flintlock... oh well.... will worry about that when the time comes. ::

Tough choice. I would look at either a flint double rifle in .69 caliber to hunt nasty stuff with a super hard piece of figured black walnut or a highly embleshed Lehigh Style rifle made by Erik Kettenberg with handforged lock and barrel and super premium curly suger maple.

I agree with the Fordney gun, but I personally prefer Sterling to nickle (German Silver) mountings.

Would you guys stop this! I'm a poor man, with only moderate means, and my hunting dog likes to eat. With this kinda stuff going on it would seem one of us going to get mighty hungry before that "dream rifle" shows up.

Daryl...CAN YA HEAR ME??? Would you like to adopt an old man and his dog? He could "Hunt'em up" for you, and I could insure those fine guns of yours are well maintained.
You don't have to send me a PM, just nod your head, I'll get the message, and me and old Buddy why we'll just trek right on up there.
Now Stumpkiller, we don't want ya to feel ya wuz fergot, this can apply to you jest as well, but Daryl is just a bit closer, and we could make it there before snow.
Oh, BTW...Buddy doesn't eat a whole lot, if that'll help.

Well, if Buddy gets along with Jake and you're willin to mow, shovel driveways, pluck birds and paint we might be able to work out sumpin. :hmm:

Believe me, you'd have a better time in Daryl's gun cabinet than mine.

Mine was a custom Early Lancaster with .38 cal 13/16" 42" barrel, deluxe Jim Chambers lock flint,G-4 + curly maple, brass hardware. Big fatt butted and combfortable cheek. Made it been using it for 4 years now.But I think there is a Bedford comming maybe with a 3/4" accross the flats .38 cal 44" barrel for my old age and retirement.

Sorry Stumpkiller, The deal is I maintain and insure the proper function of all those goodies you've got cached away in that gun safe. Buddy could get along with the devil himself.
Someday, and I would like for it to happen before I'm to old to enjoy such things any more, I WILL own a nice, fancy, elegant, awe inspiring, longrifle, or fowler! I promise you, and I promise myself...and I promise old Buddy.
As a matter of fact, old Buddy, just may get a bit of inspiration hisself, if his owner had one those guns, Hummm! I wish I was just half as smart as my dog thinks I am, I would have myself sumpin fancy for sure!

Welcome for a visit - anytime, but to live-in-the-gun-cabinet?? I'm not too sure on that score. The cabinet is small, O'course the guest room is right next door- HA!
: Might have to fight with the relatives and youngesters for living space at times. Cabinet's full, but mostly modern stuff - too many differing hobbies - not enough cash.
: Now, turn all those modern guns I've got, into muzzleloaders and that's what my bro's cabinet looks like. Almost the same ratio, in reverse.

I would have to say the Edward Marshall transitional long rifle would have to be my choice. That's why it's going to be the second rifle I build not the first.

I just built (I use that term losely) my dream rifle, a big fat .62 cal Jaeger from TOTW components. R.E. Davis this and that with some Colerain sprinkled in and topped off with a dark stained curly maple stock and a leather sling. Sounds good 'nuff to eat!

I guess if rifles ever became an interest again a close replica of the 1761 Shriet gun would be a good one as it is the earliest dated longrilfe we have to study, and such a gun would stand unchallenged as an "early longrifle" and it does look to be a fine gun in design and I suspect it would handle very well.

Daryl,
Based on your posts, is it safe to assume that you are Taylor Sapergia's brother? Also, the pictures you posted are no longer there but there was mention of a jeager, would that be the one that Taylor shoots reguarly, the one with the ebony PB lid?
