When using spit patches, after being loaded for several hours patch dries out . The question is, does the patch need to be lubricated for the first shot? I know for the preceding loads you'll need to have your patches lubricated but what is the difference between a dry patch , copper jacket bullet or plastic sabots? ::

roaddog,,, I never left a spit patch load in any longer then it took me to located - aim - and fire on a target at the range, or in competitions..... I've always heard and believe it to be true that if you leave a spit patched load in your rifle for any period of time it will form a rust ring. I'm sure it would take quite a few times, but I'm not willing to take that chance. I've never fired my rifles when the patch had dried out completely..... I've smoldered some patches that were probably drying out and had blow by..... Use a lube if your going to let your load set that long in your rifle is my advise..... I mainly use lubes now a'days and load from loading blocks.... :) I would think the old timers used animal fat or something when loading that first round that may set in the barrel for some time???

The purpose of the patch is to engage the ball to the rifleing so to creat a spin, dry or wet would not matter much, though variations in accuracy may be an issue as with different lubes with the same load combos, I prefer bear grease or a mix of that and bees wax or olive oil and wax...everyone has their own all are the "best"

The patch, being wet going in, has already pushed the majority of the fouling down ahead of it. There's a saying I heard somewhere: "The next shot cleans the one before it."

But spit doesn't have much in the way of keeping fouling soft for easier final clean up and nothing at all for corrosion prevention.

There are a lot of good reason to lube a patch.
It prevents patch burn out.
Lessens the chance of an ember going downrange where it might start a fire.
Softens fouling.
Makes it easier ta load the next shot.
Provides endless chatter about which patch lube is best.
Provides endless chatter about homemade patch lube recipies.
"Maw fav'rite lube is 1 part lizzard renderin's, 2 parts mares sweat, 1/2 part bees wax, one whole tube 'o bore butter, 6 oz. pig fat, 2 egg whites"
What's yorn?????
