The hammer also takes a beating, not just the $7.50 nipple. Nipples are much harder than copper caps.

Are you still saving your spent caps for their scrap metal value?

I've been dryfiring centerfire revolvers & ml's for 30 years. I have never noticed ml nipple peening nor hammmer injury. Most of my nipples are stainless. I 'd think they'd be more brittle than anyting else. I don't know how much dry firing I do in relationship to anybody else so I can't opine on on likelihood of firearm damage.

I change out nipples every 2-3 years just on principle just like I change automotive filters prophylactically.

I do take out my nipples & clean everything each time I shoot.
