Fellas, how feasible do you think it would be to fix a scope to a Colt 1851? Has anyone done it yet? I reckon you'd need some sort of hexagonal clamp, with the front of it having a small hole that fits right over the front sight to prevent movement forward and backward. You could probably make it look pretty cool. What do you guys think?

Forrest Gump comes to mind, Stupid is as Stupid does.

If I were given that job, I would look at drilling and tapping within the outlined area and fabricating some sort of L shaped side mount. Would be a solid and flat place for a mount, IMO. Bottom of the mount would need some sort of skirted flash guard to protect the optic. Would be a cool setup. With a mini version of the scope you posted, it would for sure qualify as a solid steampunk piece.

If you're getting silly with this a rail bolted to the top of the barrel just ahead of the forcing cone would probably be the easiest solution. It's still sacrilege I tell ya...sacrilege!

Telescopes aren't exactly newfangled. Hell, they had them in the Civil War, I think.
Certainly did. Both sides used scoped rifle for sharpshooting at worthwhile targets - any kind of officer. General Sedgwick was shot through the head from around 700- 800 yards by a Confederate sharpshooter, probably with his Davidson-scoped Whitworth rifle. Genl Reynolds was also shot in the head at Gettysburg.

This image shows a Union sharpshooter up a tree taking aim at some unfortunate -

Why?

I put a 4 power Wollensak scope on a Bedford style percussion 40 caliber to hunt turkey and squirrel when using a rifle was still legal in Pa. It didn't increase range much at all but within 50 yards it did increase hits. The scope is a pre war outside mount adjustable set up about 16 inches long. It might be a little sacrilegious but doesn't look too bad.

IMO modern technology is for modern guns. You can mix modern and historical, but I think history loses out in the combination. But then, I'm privileged to have some of both, each for different reasons, so I don't need to mix them.
Unless you can't own modern guns but can own bp revolvers. Sometimes you still gotta shoot wild pigs!!

Its your weapon, do what you want. If you need some optics to still enjoy or to accomplish a task with a coal burner better than the crude sights they come with. Go for it. It's no more ridiculous than a scope on any other revolver, side lock, etc. Or rails on a Lever Action. If I didn't have any other option I would slap one of those chassis things on the Uberti NMA in a heartbeat ifn I needed to. Necessity is the mother of all creation.
