Fellas, how feasible do you think it would be to fix a scope to a Colt 1851? Has anyone done it yet? I reckon you'd need some sort of hexagonal clamp, with the front of it having a small hole that fits right over the front sight to prevent movement forward and backward. You could probably make it look pretty cool. What do you guys think?

If I were given that job, I would look at drilling and tapping within the outlined area and fabricating some sort of L shaped side mount. Would be a solid and flat place for a mount, IMO. Bottom of the mount would need some sort of skirted flash guard to protect the optic. Would be a cool setup. With a mini version of the scope you posted, it would for sure qualify as a solid steampunk piece.

If you're getting silly with this a rail bolted to the top of the barrel just ahead of the forcing cone would probably be the easiest solution. It's still sacrilege I tell ya...sacrilege!

Certainly did. Both sides used scoped rifle for sharpshooting at worthwhile targets - any kind of officer. General Sedgwick was shot through the head from around 700- 800 yards by a Confederate sharpshooter, probably with his Davidson-scoped Whitworth rifle. Genl Reynolds was also shot in the head at Gettysburg.
