I've made the switch to black and don't plan to go back. However, I have a few cans of pyrodex that I need to do something with.

I switched because pyrodex is plain finicky. Compress too much, no boom, do it right click-delay-boom.

For those that use bp as an igniter charge, what are the proportions you use? My firearms I plan to use are a .62 cal underhammer that I normally shoot 90g goex 2f and a not to be mentioned **line .50 .

Thanks,

Clutch

Git'cha a cannon, P-dex works ok there. I got a ""whole bunch"" a P-dex real cheap. Makes a cheap boom in the cannon.

I have done that when running low on black and trying to stretch a limited supply. I had a small pistol flask with a 12 grain spout and used that 12 grains of 3f to ignite the main charge of Pyro. That worked fine and shot accurately. I don't believe there is any specific proportion required, just drop the black first, 5 to 10 grains should be adequate, and reduce the load of pryo by the same amount. That will also make Pyrodex usable in flintlocks.

I have broken the seal on the last of a dozen cans of Pyrodex RS I had left over when I switchyed to Flintlocks, using it in layered charges for weekend plinking.

Just using 50-60grn target charges, I pour 20grns Goex 3F downbore first, then 30/40 grns RS on top of that.

Very accurate and consistent...I premeasure 50 charges of each type powder using 35mm film canisters (free at photo places) and seal them in large ziploc bags...been doing it 2-3 years now.

I had some and used it on the lawn. The grass grew better, but then it generally does grow greener over the outhouse hole. :haha:

I use a similar load in my 2 cap&ball revolvers, a Pietta 'Buffalo' that I installed a SS cylinder on and a Ruger SS. Figuring the SS will easily stand a stout load I use a .25 acp case full of 4f as a 'starter' down the hole first then 3F or Pyro atop, seems stouter but I don't have a chronograph so can't measure. :bull:
Did shoot a Lee slug through a jackpine out of the Buffler with this load, a .357 125 gr. hollowpoint did not go through the tree.
