All these great knife discussions over the past few weeks has me thinking. Does anyone have any good documentation for Dutch knives, especially say during the ca. 1700 1770 period, maybe earlier? There is a “Dutch knife” that is offered by Wayne Zurl, Dixie, Log Cabin Shop and others with the six-sided slab wood handle and sheep’s foot blade. Are these based on any historical documentation? Has anyone researched these ?

Thanks for the reference. Wouldn't it be great to have one of those brass figurine handled knives for your tool kit.

You can get the handles from the Museum of the Fur Trade Gift Shop.

Whaa? I didn't know that. Thanks for the tip Pichou. Well of course I had to order one :haha: . Now all I need is a good bladesmith. No really....can anyone recommend one :shocked2:

I've subscribed to the MFT for 20+ years and I didn't know that either. Are the blades just a snug fit in the handles or do they flop around loosely?

Its just the handle, the blade has to be made and fitted. It would take a rat-tailed tang and be snug. I don't know if the handle come with a hole for the tang or if it has to be drilled out.

I have one of Wick's knifes. If it was me I would have him make it... well worth it.

The figural handle from Museum of the Fur trade has a small hole pre-drilled into it, but much to small for a usable knife tang, so it must indeed be re-drilled larger and then have a knife blade with a rat tailed tang fitted to it etc...it makes up into a nice, very early eastern trade/table knife you wont see everyday...
