Just picked up 5 pounds of it, My groups stayed the same no change, At 8 bucks a pound, I think I will look for more.

If you like it, buy all you can. The company has been out of business for about a year. :(

Is it true that the Elephant Powder company went out of business after the PITA and Save the Elephant people got together and urged the members of the UN to place a world wide embargo on anything made out of Elephants, including their Powder? :crackup: :crackup: :crackup: :crackup: :crackup:

Zonie, i think ya finally figured it out. Because of the thick hide on the Elepahant, that is probably why it is so hard to ignite the stuff. :crackup:

you can't beat the price. The Elephant I have is the latest mfg. and much improved over past lots. It was rougly 5% less "strong" than Goex, which is insignifficent.
I like the new Shcuetzen but it's not all THAT much cleaner buring and costs over 2 bucks more a pound than Elephant.
Elephant is NOT out of business. They are alive and well, but no longer exporting for the private market.
Your target, be it paper, tin cans or game, will never know the difference beteen Elephant or Goex.

Things must have changed. I spoke with a major US distributor a few months ago and he said they have about 2 years worth of stock but once it's gone, it's gone.

Please post any new information you have, I'm very interested.

"They are alive and well, but no longer exporting for the private market."

Since neither of us live in Brazil and have no direct knowledge I'd suspect we have to go on what we've "heard" or been "told".
What I've heard and been told is that Elephant.....well just what I said in my original post and quoted again.
Elephant, for reasons unknown to me decided not to EXPORT FOR PRIVATE CONSUMTION, they opted not to market for the private sector.
Powder for spoting purposes will not be available after current stocks are exhausted.
Don't take this as Gospel, I can only echo what others have said.
I suppose it's just a matter of curiousity now. The bottom line is that it won't be available for sporting purposes.
I suppose if one really had a burning desire to know if the Elephant business in Brazil is still a going concern one could research it.

I imagine 9/11 made things a lot tougher on importing explosives, especially when done legally. It's easier seen by the NSA and all those other authorities who are making our country safer. The bad guys don't use those channels...

I gotcha Maxiball. The company is still in business but the powder is no longer available for sporting purposes. I guess you and I were both trying to say the same thing. After the current stock is exhausted, none of us will be buying any more. :haha:

Best delivered case prices I'm aware of are:

Elephant = $219 ($8.86/lb)

Goex = $227 ($9.08/lb)

.22cents/lb difference

Are you able to pick up the Elephant locally?

I met a guy at the Black powder shoot that was selling it out of his truck. No stores carry it around me.

Here it is from Maine Powder House:
"The Elephant Factory closed a couple of years ago and the current supply is dwindling."
This is about as official as I can get.
They CLOSED 2 years ago. They are a gonner.

Hi, I work for Petro-Explo/Schuetzen Powder and we were the importer of Elephant Black Powder for over 10 years. The situation is that the factory in Brazil closed down about 2-3 years ago and the equipment was sold to another company to be transfered to another facility. Rumor has it that this "new" factory has been rebuilt and is in production but we have not been able to verify this information since no one will answer the phone. Even if they are back in production, the US market has become much more sophisticated and the Brazilians will have to supply a much higher quality product to compete in the US. I worked with them to constantly improve their product and at the end they were producing a decent product but they needed to change their charcoal to make the next "step" in quality. There was also an issue with ocean shipping costs. Due to a screw up with another company shipping detonating cord into the US, all explosive shipment costs went up 1000% which would put the price of the Elephant powder (if it is in production) at a price = to the Swiss Black Powder.

I hope that this helps clarify some of the rumors. :m2c:

Welcome!

Always wonderful when someone sheds some insight into these matters. I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing you a favorable outcome in getting your powder worked out. Keep fighting, there's a small but dedicated bunch of us who will use nothing but, and us flinters are locked in by our short . . . ignition times.

Late in on this post, but I have something I want to add. I heard that the original location of Elephant Powder, had been ravaged by a flood, and the equipment was salvaged and sold, as stated by Jim Kirkland.

About Jim Kirkland;

About three years ago, I had ordered a case of Elephant Powder, don't remember the lot number. I made the mistake of taking a fresh pound from the case to shoot in competition at Nationals without trying it out first. Couldn't hit anything. When I got home, I tried out the powder from the benchrest. At 25 yards, it would not hold a SIX INCH GROUP!

I contacted Jim, and he sent me a new case of a new lot, and accuracy went right back to where it should be in my English Sporting rifle. He didn't want the powder returned, just told me to spread it on my lawn, which I did.

This is a good, honest businessman to deal with, concerned with product quality, and customer satisfaction. I highly recommend him.

Is it possible that JKirkland and the "MadMonk" is one of the same?
Regardless, your expertise is certainly welcome, and I look forward to hearing more from you. Welcome to the forum.
Respectfully, Russ

yes. elephant powder has come a long way since the days
when it was called elephant poop..not powder :crackup:
last i heard it was never made in africa. it's a shame
that we "the shooters" honest people have to suffer.
everytime things go wrong. i'll stick to goex, but i bet
the price of that will go up like gas too. keep shooting!! :redthumb:

Just heard here locally yesterday that the price of aGoex is going up after the first of the year. I hear it is already $22 a lb in Cal. That's what they get for letting all them left wing liberals pass laws for them "for there own Saftey".
