The things cut deep grooves in the face of your frizzen, making it harder and harder to get good sparks. You want a face on the frizzen that is Smooth and even across the width.
Yes, you get a bit of gouging at the point of impact of the flint edge-more, if the Angle of Impact is not set at 60 degrees--, but that can be removed annually with a bit of abrasive polishing. Frizzens, everything else being equal, always throw more sparks when the face is smooth and even across the width. The whole edge of the flint cuts steel from the surface of the face, creating those sparks.
