How does the profile look on this English Fowler wrist in process? Does it need to slim down toward the rear near the nose of the comb? Thanks

Looks like there’s a tiny dip in the top line where the carving meets the wrist. One way to fix that is to play with the top profile where the carving is, then renew the carving as needed. Of course there’s always a minuscule drop-off from carving to wrist but the overall curvature should remain the same.

Regarding the taper of the wrist, I often subtly taper it downward toward the toe.

I agree with the dip, but wonder if correction will need some thinning or bending on the tang end. Dunno where that is from the photo. Thinning would be OK if needed as long as the metal is there. Bending, I would worry about the joint between wood and tang opening up.

Hi,
It is always best to look at good examples. The wrist area should taper from the end of the breech tang to the beginning of the comb. Typical measurements are 1.75" tall and 1.75" wide at the end of the breech tang and 1.5" tall, 1.375" wide at the beginning of the comb. The comb is formed either as a hard crease or a radiused flute. Most sporting guns were radiused while military guns usually have a hard handrail crease. The flute or crease should appear to taper downward slightly from the beginning of the comb. Here are a bunch of proper examples.
