Excellent bore light

I have read on more than one blackpowder forum about the bore lights sold as such and how they are in need of improvement . On these forums it has been mentioned that O'Rielly auto parts has a light that works for $10.00 .
Well,today I finally remembered to find that light when I was there to pick-up a upper radiator hose. Brought it home and wow. It is so thin that it fits with room to spare down a .32 cal. CVA bore . At only .248 it could also work in a .28 cal..The length is 3.92" ,not perfect but better than trying to shine a light through the clean out screw .
Also. It is extremely bright and warning on the package not to look directly into the light.
Just thought I would share this with anyone who is after a bore light that won't fall apart the first time you drop it down the bore .

i use the Stylus Streamlight, they are 6" long and 3/8 thick. they use 4A batteries, the batteries will last a long time, i use mine everyday at work. i've used the current one for years, there pretty tuff, i've dropped it on the ground dozens of times. amd it still works like a champ, it will fit in the bore of a .45,and up nicely. i carry mine when i go to a gunshop or gun shows, it's as handy as a pocket t-shirt.

Just remember to "drop" it easily into the barrel. The switch in the end can be damaged with a heavy drop. How do I know? :idunno: :rotf: :idunno:

Really ? The one from O'Rielly Auto parts has a screw in end cap that turns it on . I don't know how it could be wrecked by dropping it down the barrel . It is just a aluminum bolt with a rubber piece on the bottom . I won't drop it down with the barrel pointing to the sky . I hold it at an angle that the light will slide down easy just because .

I have a nice one that will also go into a .32 and it is bright,....in fact it is too bright. It is like looking into the sun. What I need is a dimmer switch on it otherwise I can't see much in the barrel other than that little sun at the end.

Try a little spray paint from about 10"s,

Ya know, a respected builder that frequnts the forum made a point about bore lights a while back.
He made the observation that the human eye can't really see anything down there anyway.
They are nice to see if you have rust developing or already have any existing scale or pits when making a second hand purchase.
But when it come to cleaning nothing compares to a proper fitting jag, a clean white patch and knowing what your looking at when the patch comes out.

Beyond looking at a used bore for signs of damage a bore light is;
"Cool, I can see the rifling"

I got tired of messing with batteries failing when you need'm. I just use one of those $2 light-up fishing bobber thingy's, green works better for me than red.

Find the Fishing section of the Sporting Goods store and go to the bobbers. There will be ones that light up. What you want are the replacement batteries. These are a tiny metal tube with a LED light on the end. They come in red, green, and yellow. I like the yellow. Around here they seem to go for $4 - 5. They are bright but I found one that came with a white plastic end cap. Toned it down just right.

Here's my second on the bobber lights. I like the green as I haven't seen the yellow. The red is too bright of something as I can't see well with them. They only cost a dollar or so and last a long time. A muzzleloading store turned me onto them when I asked about bore lights that I used to buy. They said that since the bobber lights had come out they didn't sell any of the lights so they quit stocking them.They are small enough that they should fit down a 22. Try em you'll like em.FRJ

The O'Rielly light is the best bore light I've ever been able to find. It will even go down the bore of a .32 and is almost too bright.
