Hey folks if there are feral hogs near you, be careful with the muzzle loaders going after the hogs, or going after something else while in hog country. A caretaker in Texas was killed going from her car in the front yard of a house, to the house. Now..., we will never know if she saw the hogs and thought they would ignore her, and tried to walk to the front door and found out otherwise..., and the medical examiner may not have looked to see if she went passed out from some other malady, and the hogs came by while she was "down" and ended up finishing her off,

From what Ive seen of deer carcasses and such thrown into hog pens, its amazing anything was left to ID. That would be a terrible way to go.

Thankfully we don't have them where I hunt, but we do have mountain lions, coyotes, bears and two legged predators. If I am out there with a rimfire or a muzzleloader, a large caliber or magnum pistol comes as well.

it doesn't have to be a feral hog to hurt you. a long time ago I knew a farmer that had a breeder hog 425lbs that killed and ate his full grown german shepherd dog and the only thing left was one hind leg.

I think we get enough people attacked by lions and bears to justify being prepared for them. I'm not usually though. Too much extra weight.

If there is one thing I have experience with, it's feral hogs !! One property I have hunted and trapped on for the past 10 yrs., my count is now up to 698 hogs. I hunt and trap on other properties and have taken many more, but the one property is the only one I have kept track of the number of hogs taken.
I would have to agree that the chance of the lady actually getting attacked is very slim. The hogs will get very aggressive when cornered, but otherwise will run the other direction if given any chance. I walk on trails through thick woods...in the dark even, on a regular basis and never worry about aggressive hogs.

we raccoon hunted with that farmer and when we got to his farm they had just gotten back with that hog that they had butchered. we were eating the cracklins when he told us that story. don't know how long the dog been dead.

Same here stony I’ve killed thousands and average 400 plus a year n I’m with you I walk in the dark n brush everywhere n don’t worry about them. I cruise timber n work in the woods every day as a forester n very seldom do I get into them n when I do my edc gun goes to work!! I hunt them at night weekly doing adc work n Part of my job is trapping them as well n I’ve only been charged a couple times n that was always wounded hogs except for 2 old sows together with pigs n 1 stood her ground while other 1 n pigs took off, it cost her a 9mm to the head for her troubles lol. Now boars in trap that’s a different story lol!! My trap is 50’ n diameter n they can get good running start but at times for more fun I will jump in with them n have them charge me n let them collect a bullet in the head for there trouble!

That's about the time a couple of different serial killers, one pair in Northern California and one in Canada, were using hog farms to dispose of bodies.

What I don't like here iss during the regulated mz season you are not allowed to carry anything but a mz. The way the regs state even a cap n ball revolver is not allowed. The weapon must be loaded at the barrel muzzle.
I have been out and come across hogs. I've eased along with them. They knew I was there and kept an eye on me occasionally grunting my direction but never made any moves that one would consider aggressive. I'm quite sure had I shot one things would have changed. As with most alerted animals the worse thing a person can do is make sudden movements or try to run. They will key on both. When someone finds themselves in a situation it's best to stay close to something to climb.

In my native Georgia I lived near public land that had hogs and a friend hunted them. I never did. Hogs are dangerous, no doubt. Too many people think of pork chops if you mention wild hogs to them - blame that on the "Disney" effect. But I can tell you that where I lived the most dangerous animals were the feral dog packs. In a two year period two people were killed in an unprovoked attack while only one deer hunter was killed by a canebrake rattler. That pack was wiped out by deputies. But I came across - and backed away slowly - at least three packs that lived in the woods. All one had to do is walk down the road past a location and guards would come to the edge and let you know you weren't allowed to pass.

Yet people hunted them with boar spears. They had "ears" on the shafts, allegedly to keep the swine from running up the shafts after they were already impaled.

In 35 years of seriously hunting them Lord only knows how many I've killed trapped stalked. 90 percent of the time hogs are gone. At the first sight or smell of a human the exceptions a wounded hog a sow and her piglets most dominate boar are extremely nocturnal. I've been lucky I've had the fake charge and charge but knock on wood still have never been flattened by a hog

Ithoght you might find it interesting. It's been 65 or so years since I read it and It might be poor. I remember being quite taken by it.

My sister in law lives on our property in a travel trailer. Her grandkids get on the bus when it's still dark (daylight savings time). Between the pack of dogs near by and the wild hogs around here it'd just one more thing to worry about.
