My wife bought me the 2nd season of Daniel Boone TV show at Sams and have been watching and back flipping. Do you or anyone know anything about that gun Fess Parker is using? It kinda looks like a smooth bore. Whatever it is it sure is straight stocked. Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. wvbuckbuster.

The Fess Parker/Davy Crockett gun looks very much like it may be a Samuel Baum, Susquehanna County gun. He was known to build smooth rifle/buck, and ball guns. Here'a a picture or two of a Baum smooth rifle up for auction this month. What do you think?

I believe it was originally a 49 or 50 inch barrel that has been cut down to 46 1/2 inches. It's a .55 cal smoothbore rifle. Auction estimate is around five grand, before premiums. By the way, did you note that niether one has a patchbox which may indicate the Fess Parker is a smooth rifle.

I love being married. It's so nice to have that one special person to annoy the rest of your life!

Funny you should mention ole Jed Clampett's gun. Hadn't seen the intro to the show for years. With the current Geico commercial using it to run the "Jed got his money from Geico Insurance savings...etc. ad nauseum" I finally noticed Jed shootin' a fowler. Looked at least a .62" or better!

When I was there I looked and the Davy Crockett gun barrel Fess used was was rifled.
Pretty sure it was about 50 cal.

The more I look at the lock and cock, as well as the small side plate, the more i think it's one of the early 50's guns by Hacker Martin or Royland Southgate. They made Kentucky/Penn. style guns which didn't really fit into any particular "school" of rifle making from the 19th century. Until Dixie started importing their "Squirrel Rifle", these two makers were about all there was except shooting originals. Those early days at Friendship saw a bunch of original guns being used.
