I guess we are all a bit to blame when it comes to participation.

You going to make it to Williams this year? Wife and I will likely be in the tin tepee area, she is not into primitive anymore.

One of the biggest problems with getting people out to see the matches and visit Trader's Row is the NMLRA doesn't send the local newspaper any information about the matches.

Last year, I wrote to the newspaper's Sports Editor and they did publish the dates of the event but this year it snuck up on me so I didn't think about telling them about it until it was too late.

Actually, the NMLRA SHOULD send them a publicity package a month or more before the meet to get the kind of publicity they need to have.

Oh, as everyone is always interested in powder prices, the GOEX and Schutzen powder were selling for $12/pound and the Swiss was selling for $16/pound. Pretty cheap when you compare it to the Synthetic powders that are going for up to $24/pound at the local gun stores.

Sorry I missed you Tan. :(
zonie :)

You are so right on the NMLRA not pushing the Western Shoot. This has been an on going dispute. :shake:

Good Evening Redwing,

You are certainly right about "the best shooters in the West" being there.

Some of those "best shooters" included a number of Texas shooters, one of whom was our ML Forum member Rabbitt03 (Toney) He shot one gun only, his TOTW Jim Bridger Hawken "Big 58".

He is on his way back home to Texas, and called me about 8:30 PM tonight (Monday).

He won the Light Bench Agg with a 182-2X ( a record), won "The Founders Match, took 2nd in the Cross Sticks Agg, 3rd in the Traditional and Unlimited Class Offhand Agg.

Many, many thanks for the great photos TANSTAAFL. Do you have any more to post.

If you saw a shooter with a big 14 pound Hawken sporting a 1-1/8" X 42" barrel in 58 caliber, that was Toney and "Big 58".

Shoots it rather well, doesn't he?

All of our Texas Shooters made their presence known as serious shooters to be reckoned with. One of the Texas ladies, Bonnie S. won the Ladies Bench Rest Agg, and did not use her pet bench rifle. Due to still recovering from an operation, she used her offhand rifle

See gentlemen, it is not equipment (including in-lines) that wins in competition shooting; it is the person pulling the trigger.

Sure wish I could have been there. Hopefully next year.

Best regards and good shooting,

John L. Hinnant

Toney ...

1) Won the Light Bench Agg with a 182-2X (a record),

2) Also he won "The Founders Match,

3) And ... took 2nd in the Cross Sticks Agg,

4) Plus 3rd in the Traditional and Unlimited Class Offhand Agg."

WAY TO GO TONEY ! :applause: I"VE BEEN SITTING HERE WAITING TO HEAR HOW GREAT YOU DID ! Thanks John. Fred :hatsoff:

Good Morning TANSTAAFL,

There are no "special" matches for the inlines, but there is a "Unlimited Class Offhand Rifle" Championship, but there is also a "Tradition only Offhand Championship".

In the "Unlimited Class", the traditional boys stand right up there among the inlines, underhammers, and mule ear side slappers and proceed to conduct seminars on muzzle loading shooting skills.

Rabbitt03 is an excellant example of proving that fancy equipment does not automatically give you the championships and trophys.

Just how many shooters show up for serious competition with a 14 pound Hawken, sporting a 42" long, 1-1/8" barrel in 58 caliber?

It is the person pulling the trigger that makes the difference, not the equipment.

The bench rest matches have two classes, "Unlimited" and "Flintlock Only". After the Flintlock gentlemen finish ther agg, they think nothing about dropping in on the Unlimited fellows and demonstrating lessons in shooting skills, then leaving with some trinkets and tinware.

Try telling those flintlock shooters they are at a disadvantage and cannot compete with an Unlimited Class Bench Rifle.

Of course, the inlines, underhammers, side slappers, etc., could always be prohibated and barred from all competition, but other than REDUCING the numbers of participants even more, what good would it serve?

The NMLRA Western Matches have a place for all ML shooters if you care to partipate. Key words are, "if you care to partipate"

Of course, the Western National could have been bigger and better, but it requires active, positive participation from all.

It is the individual like Zonie, who on his own, without being asked to, picks up the dropped ball and makes a difference.

I tip my Stetson to and applaud ALL of those muzzle loaders who were at the 2007 NMLRA Western Championships, and especially those who travelled a great distance from out of state.

And by the way, Tanstaafl, no criticism is directed to you. After all, you were evidently "there". Again, thanks for the photos.

Best regards and good shooting,

John L. Hinnant

Hey John,

Sorry I missed Toney at the shoot, not sure what happened, but communications went astray somehow.

Here are some pics from the firing line on ranges. As I said earlier, there was not much activity going on when I took pics.

Pics are not all that interesting, so rather than taking up a lot of space here, I will just post links to photos.

Good Afternoon TANSTAAFL,

Great photos!

You mentioned that on the day you took these pics, there was not much activity at the firing line.

Toney called me on a particular day when the wind was howling across the range; said he was just about the only shooter on the line.

Was that the day you took these pics? And do you have any more to post? Hope so.

That flintlock bench rifle in the first photo sure looks nice. Did you examine it up close?

How about you Zonie ;do you have any?

Best regards and good shooting,

John L. Hinnant

John, you are being very modest. You are not only a shooting legend but a nice guy. Some years back a friend of mine from Wyoming needed advice on target shooting.
You helped him from A to Z, he never forgot it and the story is often retold here in the High Country at Rondy's.

Thanks for the other pics, maybe Davy will have time to "close in on the rifles". As redwing said John has taught all of us on here for awhile how to shoot much better than we ever thought we could, he cut my grps in 1/2. Fred :hatsoff:

The flinter was a heavy duty job, well constructed for it's purpose.

Wind was blowing fairly strong intermittent gusts on Friday, not so bad on Saturday.

This iron mounted .40 cal lefty at top by Tip really tempeted me, but that rear sight with me old eyes has to be a bit further down the bbl.

Here are a couple of cannon pics.

All
I will post my pic's when I get home and can down load them.(Still in Denver working). I am now the Wyo field rep for the NMLRA and at the field rep meeting the issue of little or no advertising came up and was hammered hard. There has been a reasonable amount of funds allocated for advertising for next year. I hope it helps. I had a good time and met Rabbit03. All in all it was a good time. Had some good old fashioned wyo/texas wind on fri(20-30mph)so it was a good day to hit traders row and have a few beers with friends.

Othern

"Othern" is an outstanding shooter and my best shoot'in pal. He brought back 11 medals to Wyoming. And he was really off at Phx. Well our next big one is the Wyoming state shoot at Riverton, Wyoming Memorial weekend. Ole Othern is back at work, as for me?
I plan to just hang out in La Paz Co. Az. and shoot round balls till it too hot. Then head back to the High Country on the Bear River.

Too bad traders row drops a little each year. I think it has to do with the fact that this is a shooters event. Traders do well at Rondys where the "Touristas" come in and buy things to hang on the wall. You see few if any "Pilgrams" at this one.
What you do see is some of the best B/P shooters in the west. I just wish I was one of them
Oh, well I will try again next year, Just Maybe?

]The NMLRA is N A T O U R I O U S for treating and running the Winter, than the Western Nation Shoot like a ******* Stepchild. In the beginning about 15 or so years ago the Shoot was bustling with activity, and the Trader Row was 5 or 6 Solid Rows of Traders.

It was still holding its own in 98, 99, and 2000 i believe there were almost 400 Shooter Registered. The shoot, raffle, and auction made about 4 or 5 GRAND back that year.

But I believe an Ex NMLRA Director commented on another MB that the NMLRA BOD use that Profit for a Friendship Improvement, and not SEED MONEY for the Next YEARS EVENT in PHX.

The local Newspaper the AZ Republic did not even mention the Shoot in the Sports Section Thing to Do Weekend Listing. Apparently the NMLRA did not send out a PRESS KIT or it would have been there. The NMLRA has never use any type of LOCAL PR Organization (that cost $$$$$) to help them promote the Western Event out West in the Phoenix Metro Area, or Surrounding Area.

But the do have a nice New Winnobago parking Facility in Friendship that I understand cost over 200K.

For those of you who do not know or have not figured out the “N” in NMLRA stands for NARROW like Narrow View, or Narrow Field, or Narrow Focus, like the State Close to indiana where Friendship is located (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky)

Someone NEEDS to tell the NMLRA BOD’s that it take $$, PR, and Advertising to promote Muzzle loading, and a Western Shoot in PHX. I tried back in 1999 & 2000 when I was still a Field Representative, but my IDEAS fell upon DEAF ears because they cost M O N E Y...

Like the man said TOOO BADBBBB

While this is for pics as I remember the stink on here last year was around the NMLRA useing the funds for a "icecream mch" that they put up in Ind. The first prize seemed to be a In :cursing: of somekind from Ped this year, kind of rubs your nose in it huh? ( I could be wrong about the pic of that rifle from Ped in MB.) Fred :hatsoff:
