Well I will join you as a target. I know some folks like to load for bear. However I believe with a prb that it's a waste to shoot charges over 100 grains.

Alden made an inaccurate statement earlier, he stated a minie ball is tight. No it is not!

Anyone feel like spoon-feeding and burping this guy on minie balls?

I'll probably catch some flak for what I'm about to say....but I make a good target..

I'm an advocate of 3fff but I also believe that anytime your powder charge approaches or exceeds 100 grains, one should consider moving to 2ff.

Just an opinion....no need to barrage me with statistical data...

Well, I will agree ... I wouldn't want to shoot more than 80 gr of 3F, myself.

Only real reason I got a bruise is that I was trying to shoot off a rest in an awkward position - the butt wound up being against my arm instead of shoulder pocket. And only had a light t-shirt on to boot. Off hand is no problem, especially come Fall and heavier shirts, lol !

I use 65 gr 3F in my heavier 50 cal flint rifle (curved butt stock, so on arm) also with no problems at all.

I built a .54 leman rifle wait a 35x 1 inch barrel and full stock. The very curved butt plate on a heavy gun was still a might unpleasant to shoot. My fusils are much more comfortable to shoot.

I use 3F even in my 20ga smoothbore. Long ago when I owned a .58 Zouave, I used 60 and 65 grains of 3F with 505grn minies. In my .50 I'll use from 60grns to 70grns as a hunting load. 70 grains of 3F produces over 1700fps. 60 grains gives between 1500fps and 1600fps. IMHO 1500fps is quite adequate for deer and even black bear.

It is not so much which is right or wrong, it is which shoots best in your smoothie, 2F or 3F.

I like the recoil of 2F over 3F, as it seems less of a sharp impulse. However both have worked well in my guns. The 3F uses about 5 to 10 grains less powder in both my 20 and 28 bore trade guns.

Try both and see what your gun likes.

As the original poster, I'm using 50 grains of 3f powder in my Enfield! I used 60 grains of 2f prior. Thanks to all who answered here.

been shooting 70 gr of 3f in my 20 ga smooth bore for 25 years with a .600 rb. the gun really likes it.
