I like to simmer mine most of the day and keep scraping on them. Then a quick trip to the car wash using the pressure wand with soap then rinse, dry them for a week and you can bleach them if you want or do what I do just put some clear sealer on em.

Really nice buck Swampy, and I hope you have many good seasons left. I'm also a Roy stroh fan myself. I don't live very far from him, and he has done some gun work for me. He's a heck of a nice guy and I know he thinks highly of you. Hang in there buddy, we'll be praying for you.

Theres been a lot of well wishes and concern with this thread I should address. I'm not good at that but I appreciate everyone's concern. I really do.
When I took charge of this rifle, I told Roy I probably had 5 good years, maybe 10 but I seriously doubted that...to enjoy using and hunting with it. That was in 2008 when it built. I don't know what I'm going to face this coming year, some life changing decisions I have to make. But this thread wasn't supposed to be about that.
It was supposed to be about taking a nice buck with a beautiful hand crafted rifle that took me about a year to research and decide exactly how I wanted it built. Roy did a wonderful job for me and in a way I think sitting on stand with it across my lap has actually added time I didn't have. So it's ok, I'm hoping to try to get one more with a smoothbore during our shotgun season and if they are the last, thats fine, I'm happy. It's been a fun ride since 2004 for sure hunting with flintlocks. :hatsoff:

sitten out in the the woods with a traditional muzzleloader in hand sure is a peacefull feeling. im pretty sure my last hunt at Cynthias place added a year or two to my life spa. just as your time in the woods will do the same for you. remember the longer you live the more chances you will have to enjoy hunting with that fine rifle!

Snowdragon: I've boiled/simmered heads just enough to be able to clean them and not had them fall apart. I've also just gotten everything I could off the head and then hung them in a tree over winter and left the Chickadees and other birds to help me out. Another method is beetles. I've seen guys who do that and have the beetles advertise their services.
