Is there an easier way to fill a powder horn other than filling through that little tiny pour hole?

Huntin

Some powder horns have a larger fill-hole screw on the back of them where the rear strap connects to the large plug, see if that knob will unscrew...

If you are having trouble then your "pour hole" is probably too small, most are. Origional horns often had a hole of 3/8", so the old timers expected a good powder flow! 1/4-3/8 would be easier to fill too! Comercial flasks do not skimp on the size of the opening, but we make horns with tiney openings and no fill plugs

If you own a drill you can just drill out the present hole. You could even use one of those little bitty plastic funnels from Wally World.

'Course some of us use those fancy screw out finials on the plug base that give us a big 1/2" hole to fill. Some of us even work the base into a depression that forms a slight funnel to help the powder find its new home. It's one advantage to making some of your own gear.

Treat yourself to a little funnel, or even a pouring cap that fits the powder can. Makes transferring powder much easier.

Console yourself that the harder it is to fill the horn, the harder it is for moisture to intrude on the powder.

This is what I use:

They aren't the cheapest things around, but they look and feel right if you're trying to be authentic. TOTW sells these. The one w/ the handle is $9.50, w/o is $5.

The big plug does unscrew from the base of the horn giving me about a 1/4 inch hole to fill through instead of a 1/8.

Thanks for all of the input :RO:

That's why we're here... :winking:

I fill my horn from a flask...the kind with the little lever to start and stop the powder flow. The long narrow spout fits in the fill hole (on the back end of the horn) just nice.  :peace:

It is easy to fill either a horn or a flask with a 1/4" funnel. My horns are all about 3/16" at the spout and the flasks are a little larger. Just balance a small funnel with the same hand that is holding the horn/flask. Pour the powder in while you are over a clean plastic tub. When the horn/flask is full, you are done. Pour the spilled powder in the tub, back into the can.

How do you fill the flask?
Those nice CVA flasks have a cap that screws on and off the bottom of the cylinder. Plenty of room. If bdarin doesn't have one of those, never mind. :winking:

I prefer to use the small plastic screw-on spouts that screw on the powder can. You can buy them at most suppliers & also you will find that allot of the automotive oil & fuel treatment bottles have a similar spout that will work. I fill all of the flasks & horns with these with no problems & no spilling.

hey out a huntin, try this once, i made a few horns i use
for hunting and comp. shooting. got tired of filling with
funnels. had to carry it around and never could find when
i needed it. so i shaped the spout at a bevel and the
small diameter to fit gust inside the opening of a goex
powder can. the spout has to be almost perfect round
but with time and a mill file it can be done...then simply
put the spout in the can hole and turn upside down. the
hole in the horn should be 3/8 in size. give it a try!! :youcrazy:

My main horn has a 3/8" hole and works just fine, for filling, dumping, or merely loading.
: I dislike small holes in horns, preferring the larger 3/8" and powder flasks with English heads, like my Dixon.

out a huntin',get the brass of a .223 or other rifle cartridge, drill a hole through the end where the primer goes in.Next take the cap of of an empty can of powder, drill a hole in the center of it,the size of your brass, insert the brass in the cap until the rim rests on the inside of the cap, solder around the brass on the outside of the cap,you have made a pour spout for your powder can.You can probably use any size brass you need to get down to the size you need fit the hole on you're horn. This is something I've seen done in the past,I hope it works well for you. :results:Wayne.

Next take the cap of of an empty can of powder, drill a hole in the center of it,

Take it off the can first, just in case there is any powder left in the can... :winking:
