Well after much much deliberation, I ordered a late lancaster kit from Pecatonica supply. I ordered it with a 38" swamped .32 cal Green mountain barrel. I chose grade 3 maple.

I dont really have much else to say or ask, just excited to talk about it.

I have read my art of the pennsylvania rifle book a few times, just got through one viewing of my James turpin video so Im getting primed.

Been wanting to build for a long time, just had to get up the gumption and money! Its amazing how much a muzzleloader costs.

The other day, I was looking at a modern rifle and I thought man 750 bucks thats alot of money for that.

But then I just turned around and spent that on a piece of wood, a lock and a barrel

You won't regret spending the money

PR does nice wood. I'm close to finishing my TN MT .50 on a walnut precarve from PR. Your .32 should be a hoot to shoot.

What lock did you get?

Post some pics of everything before you start!

Congratulations alaskasmoker.

Don't forget, we have a bunch of excellent builders here on the Gun Builders Bench forum.
I'm sure they will be more than happy to help you with any problems you come across. :)

Well Here is one thing that is bothering me, Will having the large siler flintlock ruin the lines or look of the rifle?

Seems that Ive read that if you are building small caliber rifles to stick with small locks. But looking at TOTW and Pecatonica all their stocks are inletted for the large lock regardless of caliber.

I better call them up tommorow and maybe see if they can change it to a small lock

Alaska,

The size of the breech of the barrel will determine the size of your lock. The lock that you use then determines the size of the lock panel, trigger placement, etc. There are a ton of small calibers that have used fullsize locks and probably very few with smaller locks.
You didn't say what size the barrel was???

I think the Pecatonica kits are excellent. Here is my Verner .32 from Pecatonica with the same barrel and large siler lock you ordered. This was my second build. The swamped barrel is really fantastic! This will give you an idea of how the lock will look. I think the Verner and Lancaster are similiar. Yes.....I know I need to take some better pics:)

This site is the best there is as far as getting help too. I've only built 2 Muzzleloaders and I had plenty of what seemed at the time like huge problems. A quick post here on the issue and a short time later the peeps on this board had all the answers to get me through it. Really a great group of people here!

Good luck and have fun! Be sure to ask question when they come up. I'd asked a few that prevented me from making a mistake on my last build.

I am also interested in building a 32 cal with a swamped barrel. I have looked at the kits and leaning toward the Pecatonica. Never having built a flinter I an looking to have as much done by the manufacturer as possible. My question is that most of the kits with precarved stocks use a 3/8 ramrod channel. I would assume that in 32 cal you would want a 5/16 rod. Your rifle looks fine so is that a smaller rod in a larger channel or did you do something else or am I full of manure?
Any suggestions or recomendations as far as a kit or anything would be appreciated. I am shooting a 36 cal Lancaster with a small Siler lock and a 13/16 barrel. I bought the rifle completed. Great fun so I would like to expand my horizons. I'm new to the forum so bear with me.
Thanks
Bob

pecatonica will drill you a 5/16 ramrod hole. I called them back about it after my order and verified that the correct hole will be made.

Kmeyer, I really like that silver trim you have on the rifle, where did you get that? Did it come from Pecatonica?

I made alot of little mistakes on that rifle, but have kinda come to like those as well:) They give it character! Thats kinda what building your own is all about. No 2 muzzleloaders alike.

When you place the order with Pecatonica, they will adjust the size of the ramrod drilling to account for the smaller bore.

As to the silver, just let Dick from Pecatonica know you would prefer silver hardware with the kit. He is absolutely fantastic to work with.

Ordered my Pecatonica kit Nov 2nd... Was told up front that it'd be 4 - 5 weeks... Checked on it the other day and it should be finished and ready to ship mid next week... Good thing... It's snowy, cold and I'm going a bit stir crazy...

this year i have ordered two kits one from sitting fox and one from pecatonica river, lets just say that if i order another kit it will be from pecatonica. the cost was the same on both kits but you could not compare the two kits. pecatonica was so much better. the best of parts and wood. the large siler lock was polished and from what i have ben told you get better wood than what u pay for.
