My 54 cal TC Renegade finally arrived yesterday. I was pleased to find it in virtually new condition with only a small scratch on the stock. I paid 200$ and believe I got a good deal on the gun, given its excellent condition including its clean bore. I noticed it has a clean out screw below the nipple. Was this common with all Renegade Models? If anyone can provide any history and input on my gun and if it was a wise purchase or not would be appreciated.

Congrads!!

I have two Renegade barrels NEITHER one has a clean out screw nor does my T/C Hawken or T/C Grey Hawk, For what its worth....

I have an older model 50 cal. Renegade, and no clean out screw. My 54 Hawken has one, and it's a mid 70's model.

I have a T/C Renegade in .54. Shoots very well with patched round ball. No cleanout screw in mine either...may have been added to the gun by its former owner. Wouldn't be hard to do.

Just checked my Renegade 54 from 1980 I know I got it that year as they was one of my feel better things I did after my first wife was murdered.
Also checked a hawken 50 I got this year and it has one.
I would think that the older ones don't have them but after 1980 they just might.

It was a feature of early T/C barrels which was dropped in the 80's I believe...was really of no value and caused a common problem...if it wasn't removed at every cleaning, then lubed and reinstalled, it would soon become frozen shut, then when you tried to unscrew it, one half of the screw slot would break off leaving an eye catching little blemish on the snail.

My best advice would be to assume its frozen shut and never try to unscrew it...just clean the barrel with the normal pump-flushing method in a bucked of steaming hot soapy water and forget that screw is even there.

Sounds like a great deal on the Renegade by the way...enjoy !
:hatsoff:

Roundball!........Noticed my GM 62 smoothbore barrel has a clean out screw.Does yours?

No cleanout screw on mine (I believe it's an '82).

It was a wise purchase if you enjoy it. They're good shooting and solid rifles.

No...mine are Flint barrels...have you used your .62cal yet...if so, how do you like it?

It's a hoot to shoot!

I've hunted Quail with it, and so far One shot, one bird  Sure need to get some more to go with that lil feller. I'll be taking it Elk hunting this season. Opens next weekend!

wink, you got a great deal on a really nice rifle. had mine for nearly twenty five years and wouldn't give it up for anything.

make smoke!

All the TC's I've bought and sold over the years...starting in 1976, had cleanout screws. But I never bought a new gun. I always bought used and pawnshops.

The original barrel on my Renegade had a clean out screw as well. The barrel was in horrible condition and I replaced it with a GM round ball barrel.

IMO you got a great price on a Renegade in that condition.

Some history...

The general consensus is that the Renegade first came out in the spring of 1976. Strongest backup to that consensus is an article about TC's newest model in the April 1976 Guns magazine, and the first listing of it in the 1976 Gun Digest.

While the factory records were lost in the fire, some approximations on year of MFG can be guessed for the Renegade based on the serial numbers and best guess of the year they were bought that have been posted here and on other forums by Renegade owners.

By serial number, my 54 Renegade is almost certainly a 1976 (or at the very latest an early 1977) rifle and it does have a clean out screw - possibly supporting roundball's suggestion that it was an early feature later dropped by TC.

shdwlkr -
Can you please PM me the serial number range of your Renegade and whether bought new or used in 1980? I'll add it to the list I am building on all the traditional TC muzzleloader models that hopefully will help as a guide to years of MFG eventually. Thanks.

Walks alone
Yes I will look up the serial number tomorrow after some sleep been up to long.
Yes I bought it new along with a few other firearms not muzzle loaders.
Would love to see a good list of serial numbers of the traditional TC rifles.

serial number range is 22xxx

I'd say your rifle was made in 1978-79 (but probably '79).

Pork Chops would be from 1982-83 (probably '83).

Can only guess close within a year or two since there is no way of knowing how many they made each year, or when within the given year the ones I have records for were actually made.

I think it would be a neat project if someone would try to make a timeline for both the Hawken and the Renegade production based on the serial numbers...
