Finish question/Historical Correctness

On the subject of French Military muskets, specifically a 1729 models, I was wondering if the French ever painted their Marine muskets like the British did with their Sea Service muskets. I am working on building an "antique" French musket, and just got wondering if they ever did that, or if they simply oil finished them.

Also, anyone know where I can get a barrel band and side mounted sling mounts? Rifle Shoppe has been pretty hard to contact, and I would like to get moving on this thing.

I had a discussion with Kit Ravensher on this some years back. He was looking for an asphalt-based finish to duplicate the finish on Marine muskets. Both British and French.
