I always thought that the shiny new look made you look too much like a greenhorn right off the boat!

Nice pouch. My curiosity is piqued, so I just have to ask. Do the loops sewn into the back side of the pouch specially fit certain accoutrements? I may be mistaken but one seems to look like it was sewed around/for a small pair of pliers?

Yes he handed me his old bag and said make slots for everything. The one of the left of the picture is for his short starter.

Lots of rolling and twisting the leather. When I dye it I wet the leather and use a wool dobber to apply the dye, wiping off any excess with a paper towel. Somehow it just ends up looking like that. But I ain't complaining.

Spotted Bull... "Yes he handed me his old bag" I would have said "No thanks, I have one at home".

The look of the way you stained it reminds me of another technique taught me in the mid 70's, by a Leather Worker who ran a Tandy Store. He took a small 1 1/2"x1 1/2"x 3" block of wood and wrapped a strip of cheesecloth around the center maybe 6 or 8 times. He put one edge against the leather dye bottle and just got dye on one side. He lightly and quickly rubbed that on the leather to dye it. When he needed more dye, he just got more dye on the spot that had the dye on it. I was surprised he got an even coat on even some larger pieces of leather.

Having written this, I tried it a few times and could never duplicate the technique, so I eventually gave up on it. I mention this in case others have read or heard of it.

I usually use 2 to 3 oz veg tan. Its easy to work with and is as durable as the heavy stuff.

With that thickness of leather, it was well thought design to sew the loops to hold the short starter and other accoutrements in the rear of the pouch. That way, the pouch holds the shape much better than had you sewn them in other spots. Good thinking!

This customer was very specific with what he wanted. He wanted all the stuff that was in his old pouch to fit in the new one...and there was a LOT of stuff in there! :shocked2:
