First Flintlock Build

I finally finished my first attempt at building a flintlock rifle. This was made from a Track of the Wolf Tennessee Long Rifle kit. It's not perfect as I made a number of rookie mistakes along the way. It is nothing like the masterpieces that I commonly see posted here, but for my first one I'm pretty happy with it. Of course now that I've built one, I'll have to make another just to do better the next time. Thanks for sharing!

Nice first rifle! Are you aware of the Oregon Gunmaker's Fair held every year? It would be a great event for you to attend. Do an online search for "Ron Scott" and his website usually has all the information. They hold classes during the event and you will learn a lot quickly.

My first "build" was a 25 year old TC 50 cal kit that was gifted to me by my father in law. I have some wood working skills as I have been building wooden bows for several years and the TC was relatively easy to put together. After building it I got hooked on black powder and decided I needed to build a more period correct flintlock. I thought I have already built a gun, so how hard can it be and ordered a "kit" from TOW. Well, 200+ hours later I have to say I am completely humbled by what you guys are doing. But I'm hooked now so here we go...

Your 2nd WILL be much better than your first. And make no mistake, there WILL be a 2nd. You have to amortize all those specialty chisels and tools over several builds now don't you? Just take stock in what the mistakes were, and as importantly, why you made them. That way, we all learn from being our own worst critics, and, our own best coaches too.

Very often mistakes in building get made because of the sequencing in the steps as you moved from sub project to sub project within the build.

But overall, you should be proud of your first build. In the gun world

who will see them is you and that's how you learn.

your first build looks a darnsight better than mine - take it out, sight it in, and make good smoke.

(and let us know how the next one turns out ... you can't build one: i am sure that this is a physiological impossibility)
