I touched off my first flintlock today. It is a Lyman trade rifle in .54. I couldn't pass up the price. If i would've known they were so much more fun i'd bought one long ago! I'm seriously screwed now boys!!!!! :rotf:

Weird things can happen to a guy after he touches off his first flintlock. I dress in funny clothes now. Watch out. Congrats, and I'm glad you're having fun!

After many years of shooting flintlock rifles I find that shooting or hunting with conventional cartridge rifles just plain boring. A well made flintlock rifle is accurate, dependable and hard hitting. Enjoy your new toy.

:shocked2: You are now under our spell and will accumulate many flintlocks and they will become your friends and you will lovingly care for them and shoot them.

I'm new on this forum but been shooting flintlocks since 1974. I wouldn't own a cap lock.

I just finished my brand new 50 cal and will be shooting it very soon. It needs to start getting a little patina on the brass.

Good luck and many happy hours shooting yours.

Trench is right of course I've started the funny clothes stuff too I only wish I could wear them all the time! but they might just put me in a rubber room!. You'll feel the call to get a persona yourself, sooner than ya think, so start saving your money now and. :surrender:

(in a Darth Vader voice) Another has come to the dark side of the force (insert evil laugh) Now we have you!

ReLoad---Yes you have come over to the dark side. BLACK Powder. The REAL stuff, not that 777 or 999 or whatever that fake stuff those percussion capheads use.

You are now under our spell. There is no going back. (Thank goodness!) Welcome!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! We have another one addicted.

Well, i'm eyeballin' a .58 Lehman kit from TOTW. I did find out the 3/4 flints recomended is to big for my rifle. It likes the 5/8 soooo much better. And for the record, i have NEVER purchased a can of the fake stuff. Been shootin GOEX but now i have some swiss cuz i couldn't pass up the price. But my biggest problem is i need 2 new shooting bags! And bein a rather large man(54" chest, its hard for me to find bags that fit me. I have a leatherman bag but want something to reflect the rifles. I have a buffulo horn to go with the new Leman but need to look around and see what i can find. Also the toys that go along with owning and shooting a flint are so much more "cool" to play with! Probably gonna end up divorced over these......."I'm gonna miss her.....when i get home" hahahahahahaha!

I'm not saying if a person prefers caps that is "wrong", what I said was---"...BLACK Powder. The REAL stuff, not that 777 or 999 or whatever that fake stuff those percussion capheads use. ...You are now under our spell. There is no going back. (Thank goodness!) Welcome!"

Huge difference!

And that flint striking the frizzen directing sparks into a pan with BLACK POWDER in it is "art" and "pragmatic"... and so cool, too.

I bought a few/several plastic tool boxes at ACE I keep the supply's for each different rifle in its own box.
One for each caliber Inline one for each caliber Percussion and one for each caliber flintlock.
Nothing like going hunting and finding you have 54cal sabot/bullets and a 50cal Flint lock rifle.

I have since bought the book on making hunting pouches/bags but don’t have the leather yet.
Looks like I will need one of them for each rifle also.
I have been hooked on BP rifles since a friend let me shoot his when I turned 18.

Yes 5/8 flint do work so much better on the Trade Rifle. You will find different types of flints work better than others (i.e., they better spark and last longer for you).

The 54 caliber is such an ideal caliber. For a while I was dancing with the notion of a .58 or a .62 but then I said --- "keep the range of calibers down so I do NOT have to have so many separate boxes and bags." ...The thing is you can get a far more authentic rifle than that Trade Rifle and even though they both may be .54's they are "world's apart"!

You need to expand your horizons some more and look at some of these other flintlocks:

http://www.stonewallcreekoutfitters.com/
http://dillonsflintlocks.com/

etc etc etc....

Let the DROOOL begin!
