I shot a little 4 pt last night and this is my first deer I've shot with my muzzleloader in 20 years. Hunted with it last year for the first time in probably 15-18 years, didn't shoot one but the monkey is off my back now!

50 Cal T/C Hawken Percussion (from a kit)
80 gr. ffg Goex BP
370 grain maxiball over wonder wad

ALL RIGHT....WAY TO GO GRIZZ !!!
:hatsoff:

Now, clean and lube that "modern rifle" up good, put it away, and go get the next one with your new .45cal Flintlock...

Congratulations !

Way to go Griz. I too have a .50 T/C Hawkin from a kit, and the thing does work. I agree with the above, I'm using mine during gun season.

Congratulations Griz.
I agree with Bramble, how about some details. Maybe a pic also.

Way to go, Grizz! It's always a good feeling to take one with a front stuffer. Looking forward to the pics.

Well I still haven't had time to get the pics downloaded (soon) but I do have an excuse. I went for my evening hunt and someone was in my spot (public land) so I just decided to go to a backup spot which was just on the other side of the road...nestled back against a white oak tree and sat for awhile thinking about yesterday's buck and watching the squirrels cut nuts from the oak trees around me. About 4:30 a deer walks out. It was a doe about 50 yards out eating acorns. I pulled the trigger and POP...but no bang. :( Just cleaned the gun mid day and guess I didn't dry it enough. Put another cap on....deer continues feeding...POP....no bang (you know the story). :( Put a THIRD cap on and KABOOM. Dead deer. :)

Only bummer of it was that it was a button buck, not a doe. But I'll honor this deer as I would if it were a doe and EAT IT. :)

50 yard shot, zero yard recovery.

Yesterday's deer....

I went about an hour's drive west to meet an online friend from another forum. We had never met and he is one of the most knowledgable deer hunters I know. He offered to let me hunt his farm. He put me in a bean field...50 yards from the edge of the woods and looking toward the woods and an oak ridge.

About 5 pm, right when my friend said deer would show, a four point walks out of the woods....turns broadside and KABOOM. Right behind the shoulder. :) 40 yard shot and 50 yard recovery.

Both deer were taken with a 50 cal T/C Hawken percussion, 370 grain Maxiball over top of a wonderwad and 80 gr ffg Goex.

Now I have to see if i can get my new T/C Hawken flinty shooting in time to get my first deer with it this year!!!!

So it isn`t just flinters, had the same thing happen today minus the dead part. :)

Grats on your harvest.

Best way to get rid of that popping is to pull the nipple after you load it, add more powder in the drum, give it a few mild raps on the side to seat the powder and then put your nipple back in after you run a vent pick through the nipple. My dad this year lost a doe due to the drum not having any powder in it. Once we got back to camp and found the problem, he wanted to kick himself in the butt for not checking.

I've done that before...but I guess i had the (mistaken) theory that if my gun was properly prepared that step is unnecessary. I tap the gun pretty hard after I put the powder it just so it settles good. Guess I need to add that step to avoid the POP, no bang syndrome. :)

What part of CO are you in Kentucky Windage?

Congrats on the Deer. As far as pop's and no booms, I have only once had that problem in my Lyman Deerstalker, and that was in a heavy wet snow storm. I always make sure my rifle is clean and I also fire a cap before loading, and use a good nipple. My rifle is a replica of nothing, but is a great hunter.

Well number three hit the ground Friday night. Had a small buck walk up to me...pulled the trigger on him when he was around 20 yards. Couldn't tell if he fell or not. He ran off with his tail flagging... :(.

Anyway, followed his tracks for 60 yards and no sign of a hit. Ran out of light so I left. Brought two friends back in the AM and we found him about 100 yards from the shot. The bullet entered just behind his right shoulder and traversed diagonally and exited just in front of the ham. I didn't even realize he was anything but broadside. Anyway, he ran A WAYS for that kind of damage.

A dog or coyote found him and ate almost all of the hams. :( But I found him. And he's my third.

Never shot 3 in a season and previously only killed one with the muzzleloader. :)

Now it's on to the flint....and BIG BUCKS.

congrats griz!
Also, I'm glad to hear that someone else has occasional problems with that diagnonal thing. My last one was the same as yours, enter just behind the shoulder & exit just in front of the ham.
