First try at a poured bolster on a knife. Made the knife a little while back.

Thanks. No, I know it is not oak. We use oak all the time at work. It was some scrap custom we had ordered. I want to say chestnut but can't be sure.

looks real good Wayne. I have poured quiet a few bolsters and many don't look as good as your first. :hatsoff:

If its not Oak, its probably Ash, with grain that wide. There are several lesser species in that family, so it might be good to check out the books, or field guides to determine exactly what you have.

Thanks. I am going to attempt to make a forged bolster knife next. I love the ones that Old Dominion Forge makes. He is a very skilled craftsman.

May be chestnut , may be oak ,may be ash, may be ???. As a cabinet maker I can tell you that when you get into burls it is hard to idenify what the wood is unless you have the whole board available. Especially after finishing the species is not easy to determine by obesrvation. I often save special pieces to have stabilised for knife handles and if I don't mark them I cann't always remember what they were after a few years.

That is the same thing I was going to say but stopped myself. :) I looked through about 1000' sq. ft. of stock of the stuff we had to find that grain pattern. It amazes me that people are starting to get the, what we call black and yellow rot in oak, for the pattern. This is a defect even though in the early stages it is solid. We run about 15000 feet a day through our planner and is amazing how much of a different grain pattern you will see in white and red oak.

Sir, you were right. It was oak. It was mixed in with some special order Eucalyptus that we had ordered and I thought it was that but I was wrong. Our lumber grader varified it with me.
