Very nice. I've been thinking of repurposing an old leather coat into a shooting bag. Did you get a pattern for that or make up your own?

Straps are best stitched with line of stitch that run parallel to the long edge of the strap as opposed to a crossed it. A line of stitch across the strap can be more prone to tearing over time.

these aren't great examples of what I mean, but they are examples I could find quickly.

As I said, depending on level of use it may not matter.
And either way, a gift like that made and given by dad is (or should be) a treasure.

First effort or not, that is a real nice bag your son should be proud to own and use. It will grow ever nicer with the wear that comes with use.
Brokennock is correct about the stitch advice. Think of the perforated "tear along the dotted line" that appears at the top of a book of checks. A line of stitching at right angle to a stress point serves the same function. It can begin to tear through the leather in much the same way pulling along the dotted line can separate a check from a checkbook. Not likely to be a factor with your bag, but with leather items meant to carry heavy loads or endure sever stress it is something to consider.
You should consider doing more leather projects, you just may have a natural talent for it.
