I just got my Cabela's Shooting catalog today and while I was brousing thru it I saw they have something for the Flintlock crowd.

Yup, right there on page 112 is a heading that says
"Percussion Caps and Flints"

It turns out the "flints" are:
"Regular agate flints. Fits all flintlock rifles. Per 2.....$11.99
Large agate flints for muskets. Per 2...$15.99
The "flints" shown are the cut kind, not chipped like the flints I use.

Now I guess it's a good thing that they offer something "traditional" but at 6 and 8 bucks apiece I think the buyer ought to at least get kissed.

The high price is even more difficult to understand when places like Muzzleloader Builder's Supply's catalog's price is about $1.00 per English Flint. Even if they doubled the price to $2.00 per flint it's a steal compared with Cabela's. :hmm:

It's a modern muzzleloader world at Cabela's, flints are an obsolete item, therefore fetch a higher price tag... :hmm:

Now we all know better, but we're not in charge of Cabela's marketing either...

Maybe them $8.00 flints are special flints that can magically ignite the fake powders that have dominates the shelves of the gunshops and sporting stores, that is why they cost more... :hmm:

Most people that shop Cabela's have no clue as to what a flint is worth. I just ordered a bunch from TOTW for a buck a piece for the 3/4" and $1.25 for the 7/8". Being that you can get at least 100 shots out of a good flint it makes shooting a flintlock much cheaper in the long run then shooting a cap lock.

All you have to do is look at e-bay where an english flint is going fo 22-25.00 a dozen. makes you wonder why people would buy them for 2.00 a piece whe you can order them from totw for a buck, cheaper at other places. Some folks just don't seem to look around for the best price......

The best deal I found on flints, is on E-BAY. A person is selling most size Fuller flints and garantees no humps @ about a buck apiece, plus cheap shipping.. :hmm:

If you're a hardcore flints shooter the only way to go is to order 250 flints from TOW or Fuller that was you can get them around .85 a piece after shipping. Other than that you're gonna pay $1 a piece. French Amber go for around $1.50 and that's only because of the availability of the material.

Amazing that they can get that much for flints. A bunch of people have mentioned getting black english for around a dollar apiece. Horst & MaCann have french amber for around $1.50. You can go cheaper than than that if you want to go with american chert from some local people.

I guess Cabellas sees the flint as a specialty item because they don't fit in those wonderful inlines.

DGW is runing a special on them
12 for 10 bucks.
I saw this other thread about Kapping and when I did a google search I found out that Ohio has large flint depoists. Are their flint deposits good for flintlocks? If so why don't isn't any of that available in the market?

Well, Flint Ridge is an Ohio Landmark, park rangers probably frown on chipping away at their tourist attraction...

Plus, flint is Ohio's official gem stone...

Ohio's most renowned flint deposit is near Newark, at Flint Ridge. Quite frankly, it may be the most beautiful flint on Earth. As such, it doesn't seem right to use it as a gunflint when it could be used as a knife blade, spearhead, arrowhead, etc.
Incidently, when National Road (US Route 40) was built thru that area, they tried using flint for the road surface. Flint of course is razor sharp and Goodyear sold a LOT of tires to National Road travelers!

Well Zonie, I stopped in at Cabela's yesterday. If'n you really want a kiss from that guy in th ML dept., I'm even more worried bout ya now than I was afore.

They did have a fair samplin of rocklocks, considerin what I see at most gunshops here about. A couple of hidden treats back in the bargain cave as well. Probably a good thing I went in there broke-it was a given I was comin out that way.

Roundball/Bill - I'm confused. I have no connection with Sniper68. The original reply to your post was when I first heard about your now gone sweet deal on the Fuller flints.

I had PM'd you with my order for 100 just a few weeks before you let everyone know some jerk made the deal go south.

Again, I'm not Sniper68, nor do I know the chap. And, for what it's worth, I've never bought anything on e-bay.

Sure got a bunch of junk I'd loke to SELL on e-bay though!

What is currently my only rock lock is a Cabela's Hawken Rifle. I love shooting it and at the moment can only think of one complaint. THE BLOODY FLINTS :cursing: . It came with two flints neither of witch lasted more than 50 shots. (As this includes dry firing I imagine there is a better term but I do not know it.) After reading Zonie's post I checked my cabela's shooting catalog and not surprisingly I see what appears to be the exact same flints :shocked2:.

Hi Marc, yes, I know that, I was just referencing a post sniper68 had made to you identifying himself as an "offical vendor" for Tom Fuller BEFs...hoping he'd coordinate a deal for us like I had done in the past...

Hello to All
Here's where I get my flints:
Vernon C. Davis http://www.vernoncdavisco.net/
I have two rifles, a smoothbore and a pistol - all are flint guns. I've hand-picked through a pile of flints and bought un-opened bags of 250 and have found no difference in quality.

No doubt about it. Vernon C Davis has good stuff and knows all about muzzleloading from parts to shooting to building.

He's about the only place I've found that offers 3/4 inch octagon pistol barrels (as well as brass pistol barrels.) :)

Seems the topic of flint has come up a lot lately. Not being a flinter...Yet. Why is flint so expensive? :hmm:
