Flint position

Quick question here gents. Installing flint in pistol lock, does bevel go up or down? I know flint goes all the way back wrapped in leather and parallel with the frizzen face. Anything else i should know?

Up or down bevel is determined by trial and error. Your lock will tell you what it likes, I start with bevel up. At quarter **** I set the edge just off the frizzen whether it’s against the back or not. Flints vary in size but the edge striking the frizzen does the work.

Specifically, the bevel goes up or down in order to make the most sparks in the pan.

I like "bevel up", but if I thought "bevel down" worked better that's what I would do. Or in other words, try both.

Also, positioning the flint forward or back in the jaws needs to be experimented with. Don't assume "way back" is the correct position. Getting the flint close to the pan works for me, but that will depend on the length of the flint. But all locks are different, some need more of a "run" at the frizzen.

My Bess sparks better with the flint as far forward as possible. My Jeager doesn't seem to care where it is.

Alright guys thanks. Now another question, does anyone have sketches of holsters for flint or percussion single shots that covers most of the pistol like Rat's does? Bought some 7 to 8 ounce hide from Tandy yesterday and want to make one for my 50cal Mountain Pistol. Leaning toward one something like one of these.
