Anyone notice any difference in performance between the gray English and the French amber flints?

I’ve used both and haven’t noticed a huge difference in performance, to be honest. The gray English flints seem to last a bit longer for me, while the French amber flints might have a slightly sharper edge and hotter spark right out of the gate.

It seems like the French amber flints might last a little longer than the gray English flints in my guns. Maybe.

But, I prefer my homemade flints made from rocks found here on the farm. They work just as good as any others and they’re free..

Interesting! I think I’ve found the opposite to be true for me. The French amber flints I’ve tried have a terrible tendency to chip at the corners.

Us TMF members can’t ever seem to agree on anything, can we? 😏

😄 Yep! It would be terribly boring if we did! 🤣
Haha! Finally— something I can agree with!

A good friend of mine just purchased a dozen or so French amber flints a few weeks back. Figured I might ask for his assessment.

I’ve had similar issues with the Amber flints.
A couple I remember broke on the first throw of the cock , blew the corner right off.

No it didn’t hit the barrel or the pan…

Honestly I only bought 2 dozen of the Amber flints and still have 1/2 dozen or so left..
So my opinion may is based only on those few flints.

I did buy some black French flints from Heritage Products and was well satisfied with those.
But normally it’s black English when they’re available.

Those white flints Rich Pierce sold were excellent sparkers as well..👍

Depends on which rifle I am using, both of my Kiblers seem to go through black English flints faster while my Pedersoli chews through the French Amber flints like they are toffies.

I’ve been using the English flints from TOTW in my Kibler .40 SMR, and I’m really lucky to get 25-30 shots out of one. Sometimes not more than 15.

I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong. I’m using the #6 size, which is 3/4W x 7/8L, which is what Kibler recommended and supplied with the first flint that came with the lock. I use a slotted leather and clamp as tight as possible. Still only average a low number of shots before having to tap the edge to resharpen, and then just a few extra before it’s done. It’s been getting very frustrating. And expensive.
