I am looking to buy a large amount of flint for my possibles bag. Where can I get it and how much will it cost. My supply has been used up and I need more to put in my fire kit. Large pieces of good sparking flint is what I am talking about. help please. Mudd Turtle.

Hunting dawg- I am talking about big chunks of the stuff not those punny little pieces some sell. Thanks for the reply. Mudd Turtle.

Do you have any rock and gem shops near you?
I get rather large chunks of Ohio flint from my local lapidary store and it's usually only a buck or 2 a pound

Go to your state park system website and look for the sites that are listed as archeolgical areas. Check their schedules for events called "Knap-ins".

These events are get togethers of flint knappers who make tools and points of various eras and styles.

They are also the places where the knappers trade and sell rock, often by the truckload.

Take your firesteel, check samples for sparking ability and buy by the pound.

You might also take a quick course in flint knapping and forget ever having to purchase another flint for your rifles. I paid my $5, set down for 20 minutes and have been making my own flints for 15 years.

Here's what track has:
Track Flint

You didn't say if you looked at Track or not.

I saw flint on Ebay before. Large bags of chunks.

I would check out EBAY there has been some large chunks on there in the past

Round Ball was putting together an order a while back. I passed because I wanted larger sizes and he did not have enough to get that portion of a split covered. How many are you wanting? We might twist his arm for some down the road. I figure that it would run just under a buck a piece for the large musket flints.

Actually, someone on this board queered the last deal...that's right, one of our Forum members...and it was someone on the short list of a couple dozen who I had sent PMs to announcing that I was doing another 1000 3/4" BEFs...and the identity is pretty well pared down now.

The individual contacted at least one major BP supplier, trumped up an exaggeration that I was building up a side flint business and planning to undercut the BP suppliers and run them out of the flint business...obviously must have a self serving motivation.

If that isn't 100% BS I don't know what is...those who got flints on the first order I coordinated know without question they had them delivered to their home for a mere $39 for 50...it was wholesale + S&H...not any "business operation", period.

So one or more of the big BP suppliers believed this "member" among us, contaced Tom Fuller who had just received my check, he got back in touch with me and apologized but explained he was going to return my check.

The last 1000 I coordinated only involved 13 people...7 bought 100 each, 6 bought 50 each...13 fellow muzzleloading enthusiasts, board members, and I put up all my own money up front, etc.

Not one of the big BP suppliers would even notice that 13 people did not buy flints from them...and that assumes all 13 would have bought them at the same place...but there's always a rotten apple in every barrel as the old saying goes.

I thought is was really a neat act of fellowship to do this but watch what you say in public because there's a member lurking in the background, on the short list of people I sent PMs to.

But all is not lost, I have a couple of irons in the fire that if successful will produce the same results for fellow muzzleloaders and this individual won't be able to do a thing to stop it.

Happy Independence Day...celebration of our freedom to do as the majority wishes, not one individual.

Had the same thing happen on th TMA board. I wrote the dealer that messed up the deal and they wrote back threaten to sue me. I told them to have at it. Why someone would do something like this is beyond my under standing.

Pretty sad that there are a few folks that would mess up a deal for others like that. I guess that is the reason that I have learned to be quiet and persue things on my own. You would think that we would watch out for each other. No competition here- We are all here because we share a common interest. Bad apples just attract bugs and make a stinking mess. :cursing:

:hatsoff:

Maybe we could get Forum member sniper68 to coordinate a membership wholesale order for us as fellow muzzleloading enthusiasts all belonging to the same Internet Forum.

He states in this post ( Post#266976 ) that he's an official vendor for Tom Fuller flints.

How about it sniper ?

If you know who this "member" is, please let me know.

I don't shoot flints...yet. For the life of me I don't understand why someone would do this to you guys. What's that all about?! :nono: :cursing:

Look like someone was a over zealous in protecting their piece large or small of the "flint" business. Suing someone is a little over the top for a couple hundred dollars in potential profit they "could have" made if the stars aligned and all 13 members bought from said supplier.

Ironic isn't it. Today being the 4th of July. A country built on "13" colonies pooling there resources together to make like easier for them.

I'm hopeful sniper68 will help out his fellow muzzleloader friends...he posted that he's an official flint vendor for Tom Fuller flints, and he's a member here on this Forum.

Businessmen from all walks of life in the Masons, Elks, Lions Club, etc, coordinate things like that for their fellow club members...be great to have one of our own help us out, eh?

And I for one would volunteer to help if it was needed...

Mudd Turtle:

We pick up hugh junks on jasper out hear in Colorado, and break it up into usable pieces. They spark great. I typically use it just for my fire starting kit since I don't have the patience to knap it for my lock. I can send you all you want. Or come visit some time. Send me a personal.
