flintlock fever

Got me a kentucky type flinter today.Fellow who sold it to me said it were anyways.He built it a couple years back and was willing to part with it at a fair price.It aint nuthin fancy but shoud serve its purpose.probably aint period correct but its gonna be used only for hunting anyways,when i aint practicen that is.Flash hole is lined up about right and the bore is in good shape.Its a 50 cal.got sum english flints and it seems to be a good sparker.Hopefully i will get out sumtime soon to shooter.
I have a question-when your done cleaning it up do you leave the hammer resten on the frizzen or do you guys leave the frizzen open and the vent hole pluged with sumthin?
also what makes a good vent hole plug?feather or sumthin.
Im gonna have me sum fun anyways,hopefully ::

I leave the hammer all the way down and the frizzen open. No real need to plug the vent while storing it, but a feather makes a good plug.

Thanks rebel,that makes sense.wouldnt be any pressure on any of the springs that way.Probably have sum more green horn flinter question in the future.

Buckknife, Good luck with your new flinter, and I would agree with Rebel that taking the pressure off all the springs is a good "at rest" position for a flintlock. I'm a big fan of round toothpicks for the vent. Not PC, but easier to come by than the correct size feathers when you need a vent plug. :thumbsup:
