Flush Nipple?

Among some things I was given to get re-started in ML after a 20yr absense is a packaged "Flush Nipple" from Track of the Wolf.
So, though it may seem obvious, before I venture into the totally unknown, anyone got any experience using one of these things?
Only a guess on my part, but seems to be a way to flush/clean the bore by inserting the attached tube into a container with water/soap and/or just clean water...??? Any experience or hints would be appreciated.

Some guys really like them and rely on them. I have them for both flint and percussion, and I've tried really hard to use them. Must be me, but I spill enough water in the process to make them kinda superfluous.

They're sitting in a box somewhere right now, and it will be up to future generations to figure out just what in the heck they are. :rotf:

If you use the flush nipple be sure you tighten it as tight as you can with your fingers. They can work well or poorly mainly due to your technique. I used one a few years ago and was not happy with it and stopped using it. Earlier this year I tried it again and it seemed to work much better, go figure. A helpful hint whatever you put the drain end of the tube into if it has a plastic lid a small x cut into the plastic helps to hold the tubing in place.............watch yer top knot...............

OK, Buford and Brown Bear figured there were some tricks...thanks for the input.
So if you have a rifle, like a Vincent, that is not a "Hook Breech" and the tang screws would have to be removed everytime if you want to clean...like I use to clean my old TC Hawkin...that over time I would think I would wear out the tang screw holes in the wood...how do you go about cleaning the bore on such a rifle?

Dakota, generally there are two options. You can use the flush nipple or you can plug the nipple and let soapy water sit a few minutes in the bore to loosen the fouling. Then clean with wet patches until your patches are coming out clean then dry your bore and oil till you are ready to shoot again, at which point you clean the oil out of your bore before shooting. Good luck with whatever you decide................watch yer top knot...........

Keep it simple and cheap.

Hardware stores sell Zerk grease fittings in a variety of National Standard and Metric thread sizes and cost less than a buck. Most nipples and many touch hole liners are 1/4-28, which is a readily available Zerk fitting thread.

The fitting contains a spring and ball. Just drill it out to an appropriate size and pick up a couple of feet of twenty-cents-a-foot vinyl tubing to fit. Works great.

I use an old nipple and a tiny o ring, plastic tubing from the hardware store,same thing you buy as a kit but a ton cheaper.The flush bottle with a hole drilled in the top is a good idea,I have been using a piece of lead wrapped around the tubing immersed in a pan of water.

I use the flush nipple on the guns that are trouble to remove the barrel, works ok as far as I can tell. I wrap an old shirt around the muzzle to keep water out of the stock.
