I don't remember where, but I saw plans for a treadle lathe that used the rear gear cluster off of a ten speed bicycle. They are made to drive in one direction and free wheel in the other. It was mounted in the headstock. A screen door spring gave return pull and the chain ran over the gears and down to a foot pedal. To change speed you just moved the chain to the desired gear. I never have tried this but thought it sounded prety cool.
 
If I remember correctly (sort of a rare event these days), Roy Underhill, of the "Woodwright's Shop" has plans for a treadle lathe in one of his books. I have his books, I believe they're still out in the shed at our old address where I had my workshop. I'll go see if I can find them and make sure.
